Thunderbolt 3 Docker Firmware Update Process (NVM-C40 & 0x72)

Required Configuration and Items:
- Download (ID: 4016462), unzip and run the Thunderbolt Firmware update utility.
- Windows based PC that supports Thunderbolt connectivity running Windows 10 RS4+ with Administrator Rights
- PC Configuration: The PC must have a Thunderbolt port, and the BIOS configured as: Internal Thunderbolt controller = enabled, Devices under Thunderbolt = enabled and Security Level = No Security.
- Intel Thunderbolt Software needs to be installed on the PC.
- External HDMI monitor.
- Monitor Configuration: External monitor connected using an HDMI cable to the HDMI connector on Video Port 1 on the Thunderbolt 3 dock.
- Note: Must use a HDMI to HDMI cable.
Firmware Update Process:
- Boot the system in to the BIOS and configure the Thunderbolt options with the following settings.
- Internal Thunderbolt controller = enabled
- Devices under Thunderbolt = enabled
- Security Level = No Security.
- Boot the system to Windows and download the Thunderbolt Firmware update utility.
- Connect an external HDMI monitor to Video 1 port on the Thunderbolt 3 Docker.
- NOTE: Firmware update tool will not work with HDMI converter cables. You must use a HDMI to HDMI cable.
- Connect the Thunderbolt 3 Docker to the Windows PC that has the Thunderbolt Firmware update utility on it.
- Run the Thunderbolt FW update utility
- If prompted to allow the Thunderbolt software to always be active, select YES.
- Run the Thunderbolt Firmware installer and follow the prompts.
Limitations:
- Firmware installer will not work with HDMI converter cables. (IE. HDMI to DVI, HDMI to DisplayPort, ETC.)
- Firmware installer will not work on the MacIOS.
Troublshooting:
- The firmware installer stops working:
- Delete the file "DeviceFWUTool.exe" at the following location: "C:\Windows\Temp\" and then restart the system and re-run the application.
Log Files:
- The firmware installer will write a log file at the following location: “C:\Windows\Temp\”
