ROM Update via USB Flash Tool
Pocket PC e740
Version 1.0618.0409
Failure to do so may cause your e740 to become inoperable.Introduction
This document is divided into three sections. Section I discusses preparing the e740 for the ROM update. Section II details the ROM update process. Section III will detail the process of re-connecting your e740 to your PC and ActiveSync. The kernel ROM (nk-e740-1.0618.0409.bin) must be updated prior to the boot loader ROM (boot-e740-1.06.bin).
This ROM update is supported only under Windows 2000 and Windows XP-SP1.
Section I - Preparing for the ROM update -
Be certain the e740 is powered by the AC adapter when cradled
A loss of power during the ROM update process will cause damage to your e740. -
Backing up your data
If the folder /My Documents/PocketPC My Documents exists on your computer, you should make a backup. Create a temporary folder on your desktop and copy the folder /My Documents/PocketPC My Documents to it. This backs up your sync'ed data. There are two methods of backing up your e740. The first is through ActiveSync. This method is not recommended. With this method if you require a restore, your entire image will be restored along with unwanted registry entries. Registry entries from the older ROM image are not compatible with the new ROM image. The second method is to backup via the Backup program on your e740. This is the recommended method and will only back up your data files. If a restore of your data files is necessary, the registry will be left intact. Detailed instructions for backing up your e740's data are available on Toshiba's Web site.
Toshiba STRONGLY recommends that you back-up the data on your e740 before performing any ROM update steps.
- Remove CF and SD cards
If your e740 contains a Compact Flash (CF) or Secure Digital (SD) card, remove it at this time. - Identifying your e740
Note the name of the e740 you are updating by doing the following:On the e740, select Start/Settings/System/About/Device ID. The default Device name is "Pocket_PC" and unless you have created another Device name, this is the name you should see. See figure 1 below.

This distribution has a special installation launcher to facilitate the e740 ROM update process. A shortcut to the installation launcher has been added to your desktop. For your information, the individual files from this distribution can be found in the C:\e740rom folder on your computer. On your computer's desktop, double-click the "e740 ROM Update" icon
, choose "Install ROM Update" from the Launcher menu, and click OK (see figure 3, below). The Flash Update Tool will start.

Figure 7 - Get Connected - If you have used your computer to update the ROM image on an e740 belonging to someone else, go to step 8, below. If you are updating your e740 on your computer, proceed to the next step
-
On your computer, open ActiveSync then choose "File". Select "Mobile Device" then, if there is more than one partnership available, the name of the e740 noted in Section 1, Step 3.
Note 7: When the Partnership is deleted, you will be asked: "Would you like to delete the Synchronized Files folder?" Select "NO".
- Select "File". Select "Delete Partnership". Select "Yes" to confirm partnership deletion. This will delete the partnership between your computer and e740. If this step is not completed, there may be a conflict when you cradle your e740 at this point.
- Insert the e740 into the cradle. Make sure a connection is made between the e740 and computer. If a connection is not made, remove the e740 from the cradle and insert it again. You will be asked to "Setup A Partnership". Setup the Partnership as you did when you first purchased your e740.
- At this point, you will need to complete an initial setup of the e740 by following the prompts on the e740 screen.
- If you inadvertently deleted the Synchronized Files folder when you deleted your Partnership, copy the temporary folder created in Section 1, Step 2 to your /My Documents/Pocket PC My Documents folder. At this point, the ROM image update is complete.
-
On the computer of the person that owns the e740, open ActiveSync then choose "File". Select "Mobile Device" then, if there is more than one partnership available, the name of the e740 noted in Section 1, Step 3.
Note 8: When the Partnership is deleted, you will be asked: "Would you like to delete the Synchronized Files folder?". Select "NO".
- Select "File"/"Delete Partnership". Click "Yes" to confirm partnership deletion. This will delete the partnership between your computer and e740. If this step is not completed, there may be a conflict when you cradle your e740 in the next step.
- Insert the e740 into the cradle. Make sure a connection is made between the e740 and computer. If a connection is not made, remove the e740 from the cradle and insert it again. You will be asked to "Setup A Partnership". Setup the Partnership as you did when you first purchased your e740.
- Complete the initial e740 setup by following the prompts on the e740 screen.
- If you inadvertently deleted the Synchronized Files folder when you deleted your Partnership, copy the temporary folder created in Section 1, Step 2 to your /My Documents/Pocket PC My Documents folder. At this point, the ROM image update is complete.
Note 6: It is not necessary to delete the partnership that exists, however, after the ROM image update, when the e740 is cradled for the first time, the system will automatically try to establish a new partnership. You will not be able to select the "Device Name" you were using prior to the ROM update as the system believes the partnership is already in use. You will then be required to create a new "Device Name". See figure 1, above. For this reason it is recommended to follow the steps below.
