Issue

Many internet service providers (ISPs) now support V.92 on some or all of their dial-in access numbers. However, they do not advertise to their users that they support V.92.

How will you know if you have a V.92 connection?

Procedure

Note: This document is applicable only to Toshiba portable PCs with internal V.92 modems. Please see the detailed specifications for your model to determine whether it has a V.92 modem.

SBC YAHOO Dial (Prodigy), AOL, MSN, Earthlink, NetZero, and Orange County Online (California) support V.92 connections, but not on all dial-in access numbers.

Experienced users can make test calls using HyperTerminal (All Programs, Accessories, Communication, HyperTerminal). Type atdt [phone number] and wait for the connect message to appear. If the connect message is of the following form: CONNECT 49333 V.44, then the connection is V.92.

Also, you can type +++ after getting the connect message and then type ati11[cr]. The resulting display will indicate that the LAST CONNECTION is V.92.

If you not want to make test calls in this manner, you can make a normal connection to the ISP. After the connection has been closed look at the log file created by Windows. This can be accessed by going to Control Panel, Modem, Properties, Diagnostics and clicking on View log. There will be a text string that contains the Connect message received from the modem. If the message contains V.44, then the connection is V.92.
