Information

The new DVD-RAM2 specification, which includes 6X, 8X, 12X, and 16X formats, has recently been established by the DVD Forum -- a standards-setting organization for DVD formats. DVD-RAM2 media (discs) will be available in the near future.

The new DVD-RAM2 media should only be used in newer drives which specifically support it. Media and drives that support the new format will typically be labelled with the RAM2 logo logo.

The four DVD drives listed below do not support the use of DVD-RAM2 media. The computer models listed for each drive have been manufactured with that drive, as well as with other drives. The Windows Device Manager can be used to determine whether or not a particular computer contains one of these drives. Click the following link for Device Manager instructions.

These drives cannot read from or write to DVD-RAM2 media, and inserting a DVD-RAM2 disc into one of these drives can cause unpredictable behavior, including the following two possibilities:

  • The media may be ejected automatically while it is still spinning at high speed (up to 1600 rpm).

CAUTION: If the disc is ejected automatically, DO NOT TOUCH IT until it has completely stopped spinning. The disc may be spinning very fast, and could injure your fingers.

If the disc is ejected automatically, follow these steps to remove it :

1. Shut down the computer, as follows: Click the Windows Start button, click the Shut Down button, select Shut Down from the "What do you want the computer to do?" menu, and then click the OK button.

Note: Disconnecting the AC adapter from the computer will probably not turn the computer off, since it is likely to continue running from its battery.

2. WAIT FOR THE DISC TO STOP SPINNING, and then remove it from the drive.

  • It may not be possible to eject the media from the drive by pushing the drive's Eject button. Additionally, the computer may become unresponsive or 'hang', making it impossible to eject the media from the drive via software.

If the disc cannot be ejected, follow these steps to remove it :

1. Shut down the computer, as follows: Click the Windows Start button, click the Shut Down button, select Shut Down from the "What do you want the computer to do?" menu, and then click the OK button.

If the computer does not respond to the mouse and/or keyboard, then press and hold the computer's power button until the computer shuts off.

Note: Disconnecting the AC adapter from the computer will probably not turn the computer off, since it is likely to continue running from its battery.

2. Turn the computer on, by pressing its power button briefly.

3. Press the Eject button on the DVD drive. Remove the media from the drive within five seconds after the light on the drive begins blinking.

Click here to download the firmware update for the DVD drives listed above. This new firmware does not make the drives compatible with the new DVD-RAM2 media, but it does allow the drives to safely and reliably eject the DVD-RAM2 media if it is inserted.

Click here to download instructions for installation of the new firmware.

DVD-RAM2 media should only be used on drives that are designed specifically to support the DVD-RAM2 standard, which will typically bear the RAM2 logo logo.
