Issue
After upgrading OS from Windows 95 to Windows 98, you may experience blue screens and system lockups. This is caused by the Infrared driver and Toshiba Utilities, which are built for the Windows 95 operating system.
Procedure
In order to perform a successful upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows 98 on these models, the following key points must be observed BEFORE beginning the Windows 98 installation.

If Windows 98 has not yet been installed:

  1. Install the ACPI BIOS upgrade. This is very important. Doing so prior to installing Windows 98 will save you time and aggravation. Use the current BIOS version.
  2. Remove the Toshiba Windows 95 PCI Infrared Driver if you have it installed.
  3. Applicable Only to Toshiba Portege 70x0, Satellite 40x0, Tecra 8000: Uninstall the Toshiba Windows 95 Utilities using the specific uninstaller for your model (available for download from the Toshiba Support Website.)
  4. Install Windows 98 Upgrade. Please remember to select "YES" when prompted to save system files.
  5. Install software/driver components for Windows 98 available from Toshiba Support Website..

However if the Windows 98 upgrade has already been installed, follow the steps below. Two options exist:

OPTION 1:

  1. If your computer is docked, undock it and boot the machine in the "SAFE MODE".
  2. Select the "Undocked" hardware configuration.
  3. Click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in the "Control Panel" and uninstall IR by selecting "Toshiba Fast IR" and clicking on "Add/Remove" button. Click the "Yes" button to confirm the file deletion. Click the "OK" button when finished.
  4. Click "NO", when prompted to reboot.
  5. Run the "Toshiba Windows 95 Utilities Uninstall" program. Execute the "UNINST.BAT" file. This file will default to "C:\UNINST.W95\" directory. (This program can only be run once. If you should need to use it again, self extract it again.) Click the "YES" button to confirm the file deletion. Do not remove the file MFC42.DLL, because other applications may use it. Restart the computer after this process is done.

OPTION 2:

  1. Reset your computer, press the F8 function key, and choose SAFE MODE.
  2. Select your current hardware configuration (i.e. Dock 1, Dock 2, or Undocked) and click the "OK" button.
  3. Click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in the "Control Panel" and select "Uninstall Windows 98". Click the "Add/Remove" button to restore your Windows 95 OS.
  4. Follow the instruction to uninstall Windows 98.
  5. When Windows 95 is restored, run the "Toshiba Windows 95 Utilities Uninstall" program. Execute the "UNINST.BAT" file. This file will default to "C:\UNINST.W95\" directory. (This program can only be run once. If you should need to use it again, self extract it again. ) Click the "YES" button to confirm the file deletion. Do not remove the file MFC42.DLL, because other applications may use it. Restart the computer after this process is done.
  6. From the "Control Panel" click the "Add/Remove Program" icon and uninstall IR by selecting "Toshiba Fast IR" and click the "Add/Remove" button. Click the "Yes" button to confirm the file deletion. Click the "OK" button when finished.
  7. Now, you are ready to upgrade your computer to Windows 98. When prompted for Safe Recovery, select "Do not use Safe Recovery" option, so that the copying process will start from the beginning. Select "YES" when prompted to save system files, this will allow you to restore back Windows 95 later on if you should need to.
NOTE:

After finishing either OPTION 1 or OPTION 2, Windows 98 launches, it will detect a PnP Monitor and new hardware for dock/undocked configuration. Allow Windows load all the native drivers. Check the Device Manager for any warning or conflicts. There may be a yellow exclamation mark under "Sound, video and game controllers", "Wave Device for voice modem". Download the Toshiba Internal Modem Driver (V.90 Support) from the Toshiba Support Website and follow the instruction to install/upgrade the modem. You may need to upgrade others software/driver components for Windows 98. These are available on the Toshiba Support Website (i.e. Toshiba Fast Ethernet LAN driver, Toshiba Windows 98 Utilities, Display adapter, Toshiba Mouse Control for Win 98, etc.) If your system docks to any docking configurations, you need to create a new docking profile. To do this, undock the system and remove any existing hardware docking configurations and delete these docking profiles in the "System, Properties/Hardware Profiles" tab.
