The image on an external monitor or projector is sideways -- rotated 90 degrees from correct orientation, so that the top of the image is at the left or right of the display screen.

The sideways image may be a result of the screen resolution for 'monitor 2' being set to a "widescreen" aspect ratio (1280x1024, for example). These widescreen aspect ratios are wider than the 4x3 aspect ratios (1024x768, 800x600, 640x480, for example) traditionally used for TVs and computer monitors. The external monitor or projector may not be able to correctly display a widescreen image.

Follow these steps to correct the orientation of the external screen image:

1. Click Start, then Control Panel, Appearance and Themes, Change the Screen Resolution.
   
   
2. In the Display Properties box, right-click the monitor icon labeled "2" and click "Attached" in the pop-up context menu. This will 'un-attach' the external monitor (and will remove the checkmark to the left of "Attached").
   
   
3. Click the Apply button, at lower right of the Display Properties box.
   
   
4. After both monitors reset, make sure that monitor 2 is still selected. If not, click its icon to re-select it.
   
   
5. Move the Screen Resolution slider to one of the traditional 4x3 aspect ratio settings (1024x768 or 800x600, for example). 
   
   
6. Optionally, check the box labeled 'Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.'.
   
   
7. Click the “Apply” button. After the monitors reset, the screen orientation on the external monitor or projector should be correct.
