Follow these instuctions to use HyperTerminal to control a Toshiba projector:

  1. With the projector powered off, connect one end of the Control Cable to the Control Port on the projector. This cable typically ships with the projector.

  2. Connect the other end of the Control Cable to a serial port on your computer.

Note: If your computer's serial port has a 25-pin connector, you will need to use a 9-pin male to 25-pin female adapter -- readily available from most computer stores.

  1. Press the On/Standby button to turn the projector on.

  2. Turn the computer on.

  3. Launch the HyperTerminal application on the computer: Click Start, then Programs, Accessories, Communications, and finally HyperTerminal.

HyperTerminal is included with the Windows operating systems. If it is not already installed, you can install it through the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel.

  4. When prompted, enter a name for the connection to the projector (i.e. TLP-T721) and click OK. The name may consist of any text, and is only for your reference.

  5. In the Connect Using field, click the drop-down and select the port (typically COM1) that you will be using to communicate with the projector, then click OK.

  6. In the COM1 Properties window, Port Settings, Bits per second: field, select 9600 from the drop-down list.

  7. In the Flow Control field, select Xon/Xoff from the drop-down list, and click OK.

  8. When the HyperTerminal window returns, click File in the menu, and select Properties.

  9. Click the Settings tab in the Properties window.

  10. Under Emulation, select VT100 from the drop-down list.

  11. Click the ASCII Setup button.

  12. In the ASCII Setup window, click the box for "Echo typed characters locally" to select this option, then click OK.

  13. Click OK to close the Properties window and return to the main HyperTerminal window.

  14. To issue a command to the projector, press and hold the Ctrl key, and press the B key.

  15. Immediately type the three-character Control Code representing the function you wish the projector to perform. The Control Code must be entered within 5 seconds of pressing Ctrl-B, or the projector may not accept the command. Repeat steps 16 and 17 if necessary. If you are having problems issuing the commands, consider upgrading to HyperTerminal Private Edition (see note below).

Note: Control Codes are listed in the User's Guide for the projector. If you do not have a printed copy of the User's Guide, you may find it online on the Toshiba Support website at: www.pcsupport.toshiba.com.

  1. Press and hold the Ctrl key and press the C key, and then press Enter to issue the command to the projector.

Toshiba recommends upgrading to HyperTerminal Private Edition for projector control because it supports macros (shortcuts), which makes it much easier to issue the commands quickly enough for the projector to accept them. Some of the projectors (i.e.TLP-380/381, TLP-780/781, and TLP-790/791) wait only a few seconds for commands, making it difficult to manually enter the codes fast enough. The upgrade is free and is available from the publisher, Hillgraeve, at:   http://www.hilgraeve.com.
