When Microsoft Windows Update scans for new updates, it finds a critical update titled, "Critical Update for Windows Media Center Edition 2004 (KB838358)". Clicking on the Install Now button will start the installation process, but it will fail with the following message:

"The following items failed to install. To try and install them again, click Review and install updates, and then click Install Now again."

Click this link to download and install a different update: Critical Update for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 (KB830786) from Microsoft's website.

At the bottom of Microsoft's webpage, in the table below, click the filename that matches the language version of Windows Media Center Edition 2004 that you have installed on your computer.

For the English language version of Windows Media Center Edition, click on the filename: KB830786_WXP_MCE2_ENU.EXE

Once the "Critical Update for Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 (KB830786)" is installed, the other critical update -- "Critical Update for Windows Media Center Edition 2004 (KB838358)" -- will install successfully.
