Issue

When the computer is turned on, or reset, the message "Ready for BIOS update" appears. The computer will not start.

Resolution

1. Hold down the power button for approximately 10 seconds, or until the computer turns off.

2. Disconnect any external pointing devices or keyboards that are attached to the computer.

3. Verify that none of the following BIOS update request keys are stuck in the 'down' position: Tab, F12, or ` (on the same key as ~ [tilde]). Try tapping these keys several times to make sure that they have returned to their 'up' position.

[Note: If you have spilled any liquid on the keyboard, it could create the same condition as if one of the BIOS update request keys was stuck 'down'. In this case, the keyboard will need to be replaced. Liquid spills are not covered under the computer's warranty. See below for information on finding an Authorized Service Provider.]

4. Turn the computer on.

If the "Ready for BIOS update" message re-appears, try repeating the procedure above, to release a possibly-stuck key.

5. Comply with the BIOS update request (with the help of a second computer):

1. Download the latest BIOS from the Toshiba Support website (see details below)

2. Copy the extracted / expanded BIOS to a diskette.

3. Insert the diskette into the floppy drive of the disabled computer, and press the Enter key. The BIOS will be updated (or at least replaced). The computer may now start normally. If not, then continue as follows:

6. Try disconnecting any additional devices (printers, scanner, PC Cards...) attached to any of the ports of the computer.

7. Try removing any additional memory added by you or your dealer. (If removing the memory clears the problem, try reinstalling it. It may just have needed re-seating in its connector.)

8. Turn the computer off, andattach just an external PS2 keyboard. [Caution: Connectingan PS/2keyboard or mouse whenthe computer isON can damage the PS/2 port in the computer.]Turn the computer on again.

If none of these steps fix the problem, then the computer will need to be serviced by an Authorized Service Provider.
