Issue

The Portege 3500/3505 Tablet PCs do not have a built-in CD-ROM or DVD drive. This bulletin explains how to install and use the external CD-ROM / DVD drive for these models, including how to boot from it (for starting the Recovery CD), and how to use it for DVD movie playback.

This drive ships with some of this Tablet PC's SKUs, and is otherwise available as an accessory.

Resolution

Two PC Cards (PCMCIA cards) with associated cables are included with the external CD-ROM / DVD drive. One is a 16 bit PC Card, and the other is a 32 bit CardBus PC Card. The labels for these cards are gray and blue, respectively, as of March 2004.

The 16 bit PC Card is used for installing the drivers for the CardBus card, and for booting from the Recovery CD. The CardBus card is not useful for these tasks.

The 32 bit CardBus PC Card supports playback of DVD movies. It is possible to play DVD movies using the 16 bit PC Card, but the playback image will appear "jerky" due to lost frames, because the throughput of the card is not high enough for this application.

Both of these PC Cards work well for reading data from CDs or DVDs in the external drive.

Driver Installation:

Install the battery into the DVD-ROM drive.

Attach the 16 bit PC Card (gray label), via its cable, to the CD-ROM / DVD drive.

Attach the AC adapter to the CD-ROM / DVD drive, and plug the AC adapter into a wall outlet.

Make sure the computer is powered-on and that Windows has finished loading.

Insert the 16 bit PC Card into the PC Card slot in the Tablet PC. Windows will automatically load the correct driver for it.

DVD Playback:

If you have not already done so, follow the steps immediately above to Install the driver, using the 16 bit PC Card.

Insert the CD with the driver for the CardBus interface.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver for the CardBus interface. Please see the Users Guide for complete details.

Remove the 16 bit PC Card (gray label) and its cable from the Tablet PC, and disconnect the cable from the CD-ROM / DVD drive. (Windows may issue a warning about properly Stopping devices. Click OK in the message box).

Connect the CardBus (blue label) card and its cable to the CD-ROM / DVD drive.

Insert the CardBus card into the PC Card slot in the Tablet PC.

After a moment or two, Windows should be ready to play back a DVD movie on the Tablet PC.

Booting from the Recovery CD, for restoring the factory pre-installation:

Follow the Driver Installations steps above, but do not power-on the computer yet.

Insert the Recovery CD into the CD-ROM / DVD drive.

Attach the 16 bit PC Card (gray label), via its cable, to the CD-ROM / DVD drive.

Insert the 16-bit PC Card into the Tablet PC.

Power-on the computer. As soon as the "Toshiba" logo appears on-screen, tap the F12 key repeatedly. If you don't tap the F12 key soon enough, Windows will start. If this happens, allow Windows to load completely, then Shut Down the Tablet PC. Turn the Tablet PC on again, and start tapping the F12 key as soon as the "Toshiba" logo appears.

Chose the on-screen option to boot the Tablet PC from the CD-ROM drive.

Follow the Recovery CD's instructions for restoring the Tablet PC to the factory pre-installation state.

WARNING: Running the Recovery CD will re-establish the original "factory pre-installation" of Windows and programs on the PC. Any data you have stored on the PC's hard drive will be overwritten and lost, along with any programs you may have installed.
