Issue
Listed below are the Top 10 issues for Microsoft ActiveSync as of January 2004.

Solutions or suggestions are found below.

  1. You may receive the following error when synching WCESCOMM.EXE- Application error. "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click ok to terminate the application"
  2. Microsoft ActiveSync stops working after upgrading to Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0
  3. I had an existing partnership that I've used for months. Lately for some reason when I try to sync it doesn't recognize my partnership and wants to set up a new one. I enter the name of the old partnership and it says I cannot use that name because it’s already being used. I tried soft reset and this did not help.
  4. I get the following message "Communication error: Cannot start communications with the desktop computer." Remote networking could not start due a critical error (Error 608).
  5. I just installed Active Sync 3.7.1 and I am having issues with the synchronization of my contacts. I sync with two computers (Home and Laptop). I ask to not sync my personal contact with my laptop and it seems that active sync ignores this request.
  6. Your PC attempts to connect to the Internet whenever you synchronize.
  7. If you installed ActiveSync 3.5/3.6/3.7 and then upgraded your desktop OS to Windows XP, you may not be able to synchronize.
  8. If you see the error message "Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The .DLL file for the information service could not be found. MAPI was unable to load the information service Pstprx.dll.
  9. You have an application that worked on Pocket PC or Smartphone 2002 and does not work correctly on Windows Mobile 2003-based Pocket PC or Smartphone.
  10. You are using Windows XP and you see the message "TCP/IP Network Transport Not Installed"

---------------------------------

Problem:

1. You may receive the following error when syncing

WCESCOMM.EXE- Application error. "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click ok to terminate the application"

Solution:

If you are running Symantec Corporate Antivirus 8.0 try upgrading to version 8.01

Problem:

2. Microsoft ActiveSync stops working after upgrading to Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0

Solution:

Symantec has a solution in their Knowledgebase with the above title. Here is the direct link.

Problem:

3. I had an existing partnership that I've used for months. Lately for some reason when I try to sync it doesn't recognize my partnership and wants to set up a new one. I enter the name of the old partnership and it says I cannot use that name because it’s already being used. I tried soft reset and this did not help.

Solution:

Did you have to hard reset your device? If you did then what you are describing is normal. Either delete the old partnerships using File - Delete Partnership or use a different name for the Pocket PC to sync.

Problem:

4. I get the following message "Communication error: Cannot start communications with the desktop computer." Remote networking could not start due a critical error (Error 608).

Solution:

Do you have a firewall installed? Maybe that's affecting ActiveSync's ability to access TCP/IP. Disable the firewall and try to sync again.

Problem:

5. I just installed Active Sync 3.7.1 and I am having issues with the synchronization of my contacts. I sync with two computers (Home and Laptop). I ask to not sync my personal contact with my laptop and it seems that active sync ignores this request.

Solution:

This is by design. The filter is a one-way filter only - it only filters items going from your PC to the Pocket PC, not the other way

around. If you need advanced filtering, take a look at IntelliSync (http://www.pumatech.com), which has advanced filtering and rules.

Problem:

6. Your PC attempts to connect to the Internet whenever you synchronize.

Solution:

This is caused by ActiveSync attempting to start Internet pass through. You can disable this by launching ActiveSync, clicking on File - Connection Settings. Uncheck the option "Allow Network and RAS..." Also if you have an Inbox POP3 or IMAP4 account on your Pocket PC 2002, select the ActiveSync profile. This will prevent your Pocket PC from using the PC for Internet pass through to access e-mail.

Problem:

7. If you installed ActiveSync 3.5/3.6/3.7 and then upgraded your desktop OS to Windows XP, you may not be able to synchronize.

Solution:

You need to check and see if ActiveSync is running in compatibility mode by right clicking on the program or shortcut. If it is, then remove these settings and you should be able to sync.

Problem:

8. If you see the error message "Unable to open your default e-mail folders. The .DLL file for the information service could not be found. MAPI was unable to load the information service Pstprx.dll.

Solution:

Be sure the service is correctly installed and configured." then install the latest Office XP Service Pack or follow the work around at Microsoft article 293058 available on www.microsoft.com.

Problem:

9. You have an application that worked on Pocket PC or Smartphone 2002 and does not work correctly on Windows Mobile 2003-based Pocket PC or Smartphone.

Solution:

Database Conversion Wizard Power Toy from Microsoft site.

Problem:

10. You are using Windows XP and you see the message "TCP/IP Network Transport Not Installed"

Solution:

Click on Start -> Run and enter the command "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt", click OK. You must restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
