Issue

Computer will not enter Hibernation, Stand-by, or will not do a complete shutdown.

Resolution

This is usually caused by additional software or software drivers for hardware that the user has added. Unfortunately the software causing the problem could be anything. Some examples that we have seen have been PC Anywhere version 10.051 and some versions of Quicken which use a background "download manager".

Toshiba computers are always tested to verify that with the factory software they will Hibernate or standby and will shut down properly. So one option is to reload the factory software. This will cause all data not saved to be lost. But once the factory software is loaded and everything works, you can add software or hardware one piece at a time and verify that things keep working. Obviously the last thing you added is the culprit. Reboot the computer after each thing is added, as some software is not completely installed until the computer is rebooted at least once.

You can also use taskmanager (right click on start/task bar) to see what programs and tasks are running. You can use "msconfig" to try not loading some of those applications or programs. Be careful because if you remove something that is necessary to the computer you may cause it to no longer boot and you may need to restore the factory software. Another option, and perhaps one of the safest, is to run "add/remove programs" from control panel (accessed from the start menu).

Also use this article from Microsoft to troubleshoot issues. Although it states it is for Windows 2000, it still applies for Windows XP, etc. Article Q266169.
