Issue

Beginning January 7, 2004, if you visit a Website that requires Verisign security certification, you may encounter an error message indicating "The security certificate has expired or is not yet valid."

This can happen if Sun Microsystems' Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version 1.4.2_02 is installed and configured as the default handler for Java Applets.  Toshiba included the Sun JRE version 1.4.2_02 in numerous PC models.

For more detailed information about this issue, please refer to Sun Microsystems' Alert Notification at
http://jp.sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/retrieve.pl?doc=fsalert%2F57436

Resolution

To resolve this issue, Toshiba recommends that you upgrade the Sun JRE on your system to version 1.4.2_03 or higher.  You can download JRE 1.4.2_03 from Sun Microsystems at http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html

Procedure

To verify that you are using the Sun Java Runtime Environment as the default handler for Java applets, in Microsoft Internet Explorer, click Tools / Internet Options, then click the Advanced tab in the Internet Options properties.  Scroll down to display the "Java (Sun)" entry as shown in the illustration below.

Verify JRE Version

If there's a checkmark next to "Use Java 2 v1.4.2 for ‹applet›", then the Sun JRE is your default handler for Java Applets.  You should download and install JRE version 1.4.2_03.

Downloading JRE Version 1.4.2_03 From Sun

Visit http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html, and click to download the Windows JRE installer as shown in the illustration below.

Download the Sun JRE

Accept the license agreement as presented on the screen.  On the next screen, Select the Windows Platform download of your choice.

The "Windows Offline Installation" downloads a 14MB file, and is a good choice if you need to upgrade multiple systems over a LAN.  If you choose this option, you should save the file to your system, then double-click it after the download finishes.

The other (simply, "Windows Installation") downloads a 1MB file that retrieves what it needs over the internet as it installs.  When you click it, you can either open this file from Sun's site, or save it to your system and double-click it from there to begin the installation.

Export Control and EULA
Use of any software made available for download from this system constitutes your acceptance of the Export Control Terms and the terms in the Dynabook end-user license agreement both of which you can view before downloading any such software.
