Resolution

Note:
Because of the difficulty in reproducing the problem, Toshiba has not been able to test these solutions. Proceed at your own risk.

Launch the Recovery Console and run the chkdsk /r command. On OEM versions of Windows XP Home or Professional, the Recovery Console may not be available. If this is the case, perform the following steps:

From another computer, download the appropriate Windows XP Setup disk set from Microsoft's website:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33290 (Windows XP Home Edition)

or

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=33291 (Windows XP Professional Edition)

Navigate to where the file was saved on your hard drive, double-click it, and follow the on-screen instructions. You will need six high-desity (1.44MB) floppy diskettes.

Insert disk# 1 of the set into the floppy drive on the system you want to run the recovery console and boot from it. If your system has a USB FDD, you can boot to it by holding down the U key while powering up the system until you see the FDD access LED flash.

The system will load files from each of the floppy diskettes and prompt you to switch disks as needed. When the Welcome to Setup screen is displayed, press R to pick the option to repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console

You will be prompted to choose the installation you would like to log onto. Typically there is only one installtion to choose from, which is 1: C:\Windows. If this is the case type 1 and press the Enter key or pick the number corresponding to the installation that you want to log onto.

Enter the local administrator password. If you did not set an administrator password when Windows XP was initially setup up, press the Enter key to continue.

At the C:\Windows prompt, type chkdsk /r and press the Enter key.

You will be prompted for the path to AUTOCHK.EXE. Type C:\Windows\System32 and press the Enter key.

The recovery process will begin. This will take several minutes.

When the recovery process completes, type Exit and press the Enter key to exit the Recovery Console and the system will restart.

Continue with step 2 below.

Apply the critical update contained in Microsoft knowledgebase document Q31504 (This is available in the latest service pack for Windows XP or any newer operating systems.)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q315403

or

install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (see Microsoft knowedgebase document Q322389).

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q322389

If performing these procedures does not fix the problem, then you may need to do a full factory software restore using the restore/recovery CDs that shipped with the computer. After restoring the factory software, apply the fix in step #2 above. Doing a full factory restore / re-image of the hard drive will cause all data to be lost.
