Issue

In Device Manager a "Base System Device" shows up as not working.

Resolution

A Base System Device could be several things, as it is a generic term. You may have this issue when the built in SD (Secure Digital) Card Reader drivers are not loaded correctly.

If your computer has an SD Card slot and the device is not showing up in Device Manager, then go to the support website and find drivers for your model. Look for "Toshiba SD Card Driver set for Windows XP/2000". Install it and it should correct your issue. If not, then check Device Manager for other devices that should be listed, but are not listed.

Note - This normally only happens when a retail version of Windows is installed on the computer rather then using the full Restore CD that shipped with the computer.

How to get into Device Manager:

  1. Click Start -> Control Panel.
  2. Click Performance and Maintenance link. (Skip this step if using the Classic view of Control panel.)
  3. Click System control panel link.
  4. Click Hardware tab.
  5. Click Device Manager button.
