Issue

This Support Bulletin applies to Toshiba notebook computers with USB 2.0 ports on which Windows XP has been installed or on which Windows XP Home Edition has been upgraded to Windows XP Professional.

Control Panel's Device Manager shows that one or more USB devices is not working properly -- indicated by exclamation point characters ("!") to the right of the device names.

This problem may be caused by improper installation of the USB 2.0 device drivers.

Resolution

Install Service Pack 1 for Windows XP (available from www.microsoft.com). Then launch Control Panel's Device Manager and remove the USB devices that are shown as not working (those with exclamation points to the right of the device name), as follows:

  1. Click Start, then Control Panel.

  2. Click the Performance and Maintenance link. (Skip this step if Windows XP is set to use the Classic view of Control Panel).

  3. Click Control Panel's System link or icon.

  4. Click the Hardware tab.

  5. Click the Device Manager button.

  6. Uninstall any USB devices followed by exclamation points, by right-clicking the entries for them and then clicking Uninstall.

  7. Restart Windows (Start > Shut Down > Restart). Windows XP will re-detect the uninstalled devices, and install them properly.

This problem typically occurs after an upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows XP Professional, or after the installation of a retail version of Windows XP. It generally does not occur after Windows XP has been installed from the Recovery CD that ships with the computer.

If this procedure does not solve the problem with the USB device(s), please contact the manufacturer of that device for further assistance.
