The Emergency Management Port (EMP) is a tool designed to access the Toshiba Magnia Server
incase conventional means are unavailable. The communication is conducted at the BIOS level
and allows the external unit to access features such as Restart, Power On/Off, and visibility of
the Event log.
Synonym - EMP, E.M.P., or Emergency Management Port
- Procedure
REQUIREMENTS:
- MS-DOS Boot Diskette (1 floppy)
- Server Setup Utility (2 floppies)
- 1 Serial/Null modem cable or Modem
PROCEDURES:
I. Enable Serial Port for E.M.P in System Setup Utility (S.S.U.)
1. Using the System Setup Utility CD-ROM, create copies of:
a. MS-DOS Boot diskette
b. System Setup Utility Disk 1 and Disk 2
2. From the System Setup Utility Disk 1, copy the following files to the MS-DOS boot disk:
a. Autoexec.bat
b. Config.sys
c. Finddisk.exe
3. Insert MS-DOS Boot Diskette into the floppy drive and reboot Server.
4. When prompted, remove the MS-DOS diskette and insert the System Setup Utilities disk 1 then disk 2.
5. At the System Setup Utility screen, beneath Available Tasks in the Task section, double-click on Resources – if a message box appears asking to restore saved settings, click on <NO>.
6. In the Resource Configuration Add-in screen, double-click on "Baseboard: System Board".
7. In the "Baseboard: System Board" screen, double-click on On-Board Communication Devices Group.
8. Highlight "Serial Port 2 Configuration" and verify that the port is enabled. If the value for the "Choice" line is Disabled, Select 2F8h. If selecting this setting causes a conflict dialog box to appear, click on <Yes> to automatically resolve the conflict.
9. Click on <OK> then <Yes> to commit changes.
10. Click on <Close> at the Resource Configuration Add-In screen.
11. Click on File…Exit on the System Setup Utility screen to exit out of the application.
II. System Settings for EMP in the BIOS
1. Remove any floppy diskettes from the drive and reboot the Server (<Ctrl> + <Alt> + <Delete>) then Press <F2> to enter Setup.
2. Using the arrow keys, highlight "Server".
3. With System Management highlighted, press the <Enter> key.
4. Highlight EMP Access Mode and press the <Enter> key.
5. Select either Pre-Boot only or Always Active to enable EMP access.
a. Pre-Boot - only enables EMP during power down through end of POST when Operating System boots.
b. Always Active – EMP is always enabled. COM2 cannot be used by operating system.
For increased security, enter a password by highlighting the EMP Password Switch, pressing the <Enter> key, and then select "Enable". On the EMP Password line, enter your password. This password will be requested before connection between the Client software and the Server.
NOTE: Disabling the EMP Password Switch and/or leaving the EMP Password line blank will allow anyone access to the Server via EMP.
6. EMP Restricted Mode Access – Leave as Disable.
When set to Enabled, the Power On/Off and Reset server controls via EMP will no longer be available.
7. EMP Direct Connect/Modem Mode – Sets how EMP will connect to the Server.
a. Direct Cable Connect - Requires a null modem cable connected directly to COM2 connector port to the EMP console machine. (The console machine would be a computer that has the EMP Console Software loaded).
b. Modem – In the BIOS,
1) Select Server, then select Console Redirection.
2) Select 2F8h for the COM string.
NOTE: When using a modem, Toshiba recommends using one of these two serial modems:
- U.S. Robotics Sportster Voice External 33.6 Fax/modem
- U.S. Robotics Courier V.Everything Modem.
- Export Control and EULA
