How to Configure the Magnia Server BIOS for EMP use.

Synonym - EMP, E.M.P., or Emergency Management Port

Procedure
  1. Enter into the Server BIOS Setup Utility.
  2. Select the "Integrated Peripheral Configuration" item from the "Advanced" Menu.
  3. Ensure the COM2 device is enabled.
  4. Note the COM2 device’s Base I/O Address and Interrupt settings. Write them down if needed.
  5. Select the "System Management" item from the "Server" menu.
  6. The available options are as follows:

System Event Logging

Must be set to "Enabled" for the system to maintain an Event Log for service retrieval.

Clear Event Log

Set to "No". The "Yes" setting will clear the Event Log when the Server BIOS Setup Utility is terminated.

EMP Password Switch

A setting of "Disabled" does not require a remote user to enter a password to access the EMP. A Setting of "Enabled" Requires a remote user to enter the correct password before being granted access to the EMP. After changing this to "Enabled", you will be prompted to define the remote access EMP password.

EMP ESC Sequence

This is used only when a modem is attached to the EMP for remote access and is used by the BIOS to terminate a phone line connection under certain operating conditions. This should always be "+++" which is the modem escape character sequence used by Hayes AT Command Set compatible modems.

EMP Hangup Line String

This is used only when a modem is attached to the EMP for remote access and is used by the BIOS to terminate a phone line connection under certain operating conditions. This should always be "ATH" which is the Hayes AT Command Set command to hang up during an active connection.

Modem Init String

This setting is used only when a modem is attached to the EMP for remote access and is sent to the modem by BIOS every system reset if the modem does not have an active connection (i.e. CD Asserted). This character string must be compatible to the particular modem in use for remote access via modem to work properly. The character string must program the modem with the following key items:

Auto-Answer operating mode enabled

DTR state is ignored

CTS operates normally

DSR forced on or on when ready to accept data

CTS to computer flow control enabled

Modem to computer speed remains constant & independent of line speed

EMP Access Mode

This setting controls the EMP operating mode under the following conditions:

EMP Restricted Mode Access

This setting controls the ability of the Remote Console Application to Power On/Off and Reset the Server. The setting of "Disabled" will allow the EMP connection to remotely Power On/Off and Reset the Server. The setting of "Enabled" will not allow the EMP connection to remotely Power On/Off and Reset the Server.

EMP Direct Connect/Modem Mode

This setting controls EMP internal operation depending upon whether a direct cable or modem connection is used for EMP access. This should be set to "Modem Mode" for modem access and set to "Direct Mode" for direct cable access.

7. Select the "Console Redirection" item from the "Server" menu.

8. The available options are as follows:

COM Port Address

The COM Port I/O address to use for console re-direction. To enable console re-direction to the EMP, pick the COM Port I/O address as noted in step 4 above. The IRQ # setting will automatically populate accordingly. To disable console re-direction, select the "Disabled" setting".

Baud Rate

This setting is used to set the EMP baud rate. Although several settings are available, this should be set to "19.2k" as any other setting will prevent the remote console application to properly display characters when operating in redirect mode.

Console Type

This setting controls terminal emulation for the remote console application redirection window and should be set to "PC ANSI".

Flow Control

This setting controls the flow control used for data communication on the EMP. Set to "CTS/RTS + CD" if a modem is attached to the EMP or set to "CTS/RTS" if a direct cable connection is used.

9. Save the BIOS setup and exit the Server BIOS Setup Utility.
