If a WEP Key other than Key1 is used for Wi-Fi encryption by the e740, the number of the key that is used after a soft reset will be the next lower number. If the user starts out with Key2, the PDA will use Key1 after a soft reset.
COMMENTS:
A Wi-Fi Access Point can use up to 4 encryption keys. One of these 4 keys is assigned as the key that the AP will use to transmit data. The wireless client can also have 4 WEP keys. The CLIENT and the AP both have to have a set of common keys. If the AP is transmitting with Key2, then the CLIENT must have the same value for Key2. The CLIENT can transmit on a different key than the one that the AP is using to transmit. For instance, if the CLIENT will transmit with Key4, then the AP will need to have the same value for its Key4. In this example, Key2 and Key4 must match in both the client and the AP.
The working configuration is that both the CLIENT and the AP use the same key.
The Soft Reset Issue occurs as follow:
If the CLIENT is using Key4 to transmit data, after a soft reset Key3 will be used. If Key3 is not programmed in the AP or in the client, then the two will no longer communicate. However, the configuration screen for WEP Keys will still indicate that the PDA is using Key4.
If Key3 is used to transmit, then after a soft reset Key2 will be used.
If Key2 is used to transmit, then after a soft reset Key1 will be used.
The e740 does not store a table of WEP Keys for each Access Point that the user wants to access. Each of the 4 Keys can be associated with a different AP. In other words, there could be one AP which transmits on Key1, another that transmits on Key2, another that transmits on Key3, and one that transmits on Key4. The e740 could be configured with 4 WEP keys, one that matches each AP. In this case, if the e740 was configured to talk to an AP using Key2 after a soft reset the e740 would be using Key1 and still trying to get to the same AP which needed Key2.
There is no issue if only Key1 is used.- Resolution
