C Installing Windows NT with the WINNT /X /B method
An alternate method to install Windows NT when either the Floppy Setup Disks w/CD or the Bootable CD Setup is not possible is to create a DOS bootable diskette with DOS CDROM Drivers. Booting off this diskette allows you to access the files on the Windows NT Setup CD. By changing to the i386 directory on the CD (such as d:\i386) you can launch a manual installation of Windows NT using the following command line from DOS: WINNT/X/B
Note: It is also possible to copy all the files from the i386 directory on the CD to the hard drive and then initiate Windows NT Setup from the hard drive.
IMPORTANT: The target hard drive must be partitioned and formatted with a FAT file system (such as DOS) in order for WINNT /X /B to be used.
C-1 Required items needed before you start:
- Windows NT Setup CD.
- Intel PRO100+ (82558) Drivers Diskette - To
create the PRO100+ Drivers Disk from the Server Setup
Tool (SST) CD do the following:

- The SST Main Menu should automatically start. If not, double click on the drive letter for the CD.
- Click on Utilities from the SST Main Menu.
- Click on Creating FDs from the Utilities menu.
- Select the Intel LAN Windows NT/NetWare option and clcik on OK
- Insert a blank diskette in the drive and press OK
- Press Y at the DOS Dialog Box.
- After the disk is created, label the disk.
- AMI MegaRAID Drivers Diskette (RAID Systems only.
The Diskette should be included in the option kit)
C-2 Starting the NT Installation Process
To install Windows NT with the WINNT /X /B method, follow the steps below.
- Insert the Toshiba MS-DOS Boot Disk into the floppy drive and turn on the system.
- At the A:\ command prompt, change to the CDROM at Z:\.
- Change to the i386 directory on the CD.
- Type the following command followed by Enter
- Winnt /x /b
- Press Enter at the Source File Location screen.
- Setup will copy files to your hard drive.
- After Setup completes copying, remove the DOS Diskette
and press Enter to reboot.
Note: If the system contains an AMI MegaRAID Controller, then go to:
"B-3 Forcing Auto-Detection of the AMI MegaRAID during Windows NT Setup" - At the Welcome to Setup screen, press Enter to continue.
- Verify that the appropriate SCSI drivers are installed and press Enter to continue.
- Go to A-3 "Manual Installation Of Windows NT - Step 1.
- At the Create Partition screen, press Enter to install NT on the highlighted partition.
- At the Format Partition screen, select Leave the current file system intact (No Changes) menu item and press Enter to continue.
