Display settings cannot be changed under Windows NT 4.0 with PC Anywhere installed

Issue
After installing a display adapter driver to be able to change the display settings from VGA display mode, Windows NT will require a reboot. The message, "Invalid Display Settings" will display and you will still be unable to change to the proper display settings.
Resolution

If PC Anywhere is installed on the computer, follow these steps to resolve this issue.

  1. Disable AW_HOST.SYS
  2. Install new video drivers.
  3. Reboot the computer.
  4. Configure video settings in control panel under Display.
  5. Enable AW_HOST.SYS
  6. Reboot before using PC Anywhere as a host.

AW_HOST.SYS can be disabled using the following procedure.

  1. Enter Control Panel and select Devices.
  2. Select the AW_HOST device.
  3. Click on the Startup button.
  4. Set the Startup Type to Disabled.
  5. A dialog will appear that says "Changing the Startup Type for the AW_HOST device may leave the system in an unusable state. Do you want to make the change?"
  6. Click on the Yes button.

AW_HOST.SYS can be enabled using the following procedure.

  1. Enter Control Panel and select Devices.
  2. Select the AW_HOST device.
  3. Click on the Startup button.
  4. Set the Startup Type to System.
