Setting up Windows 98 and USB for use with a PDR-M70 digital camera.
COMMENTS:
The CD-ROM disk that comes with your camera includes the following 3 installation options.
Image Expert w/Camio Viewer
Let's you Download (Get), Manage, Enhance and Print your Images and Photo Albums w/Camio Viewer.
USB driver
The USB driver lets you use the USB cable to connect your PDR-M70 to a computer using
Windows 98 or Windows 2000.
Note: You will need either the FlashPath Floppy Adapter or the PC Card
Quicktime 4
You can play imported movies on PCs that have this software installed. Quicktime 4 also includes a program called Picture Viewer that lets you view pictures of various formats.
IMPORTANT:
Whenever you use the USB connection BOTH the camera and the computer MUST BE be turned on BEFORE connecting the USB cable to either device.
Note - I recommend using AC power when installing the USB option for the first time USB setup and anytime your camera's battery is less than half full.
Remember - Make sure the camera is off before plugging in it's AC Adapter. If the AC Adapter is plugged in while the computer is on there is a chance that camera settings will reset or that the camera itself will malfunction.
DO NOT plug the USB cable into either the camera or the computer until instructed to do so.
What you need:
Camera
- Toshiba Still Camera CD-ROM disk (or disks)
- AC Adapter
- USB cable that came with your computer
Computer with:
- USB port
- CD-ROM drive ( or floppy)
- Windows 98, ME or Windows 2000
USB Software Installation Procedures
The following instructions should be carefully followed to insure proper installation of the USB import option for your PDR-M70.
- With your computer turned on insert the CD-ROM supplied
with the PDR-M70 into
the CD-ROM drive.
Note: The screen for selecting the display language appears. - Click "English".
- Click "Install Image Expert"
Follow the on-screen instructions to the completion of the Image Expert installation.
Note: Quicktime installs after Image Expert has been installed. - Once both software packages have completed, restart the computer.
- Power on the camera and then turn the camera's "Mode
Dial" to the PC option.
Note: The PC option figure is a 2 headed arrow. - When BOTH the computer and camera are completely powered-up,
then and only then should you plug in the USB cable to
either the camera or computer.
- Computer - The USB end of cable w/white tip approximately 1/2' wide.
- Camera - The PC/AV connector is a keyed black connector and has a port on the camera which notes PC/AV.
USB Hardware Installation procedures for Windows 98
With both devices powered up and the USB cable properly attached to both the camera and computer use the following instructions to complete the USB driver installation for Windows 98.
- The Add New Hardware Wizard screen should appear as soon as the USB cable is connected to both devices. Click Next.
- Select "Search for the best driver for your device". Click Next
- Insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, check the "CD-ROM drive" check box, and then click Next.
- Click Next once more.
- Select "Search for the best driver for your device.(Recommended)". Click Next.
- Check the "CD-ROM drive" option box and then
click Next.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install the drivers.
The USB should now be installed properly and should be automatically recognized whenever you connect the USB cable. If you have pictures in your camera you will automatically be given the option of importing them into the computer using the Camio Viewer.
SmartMedia Precautions:
- To remove the SmartMedia from the PDR-M70 when the PDR-M70
is connected to your personal computer by the USB cable,
use the following procedure.
1. Right click the drive icon in My Computer and select Eject.
2. Make sure the viewfinder lamp on the PDR-M70 is not lit, and remove the SmartMedia.
Note: If you remove the SmartMedia without doing this, the USB connection will be broken and may cause your personal computer to malfunction. - To restore the connection, either reconnect the USB
cable, or reboot your personal computer.
More notes about the SmartMedia memory cards in your camera:
SmartMedia cards are precision electronic devices and special care should be used with them.
- Remove and insert a SmartMedia card only with the camera's power off.
- Never remove a SmartMedia card or switch the camera OFF during data recording or during data erasing(SmartMedia formatting). These actions might damage the SmartMedia.
- Use only the SmartMedia specified for use with the PDR-M70. The use of other SmartMedia could damage the camera.
- DO NOT bend, drop or expose the SmartMedia to excessive
shock.
Note: Don't stick SmartMedia cards loose in a pocket or in a purse where they can get bumped, mashed or bent. - DO NOT expose the SmartMedia card to static electricity or electrical noise.
- DO NOT use or store SmartMedia in very hot, humid or
corrosive environments.
