Issue

CD Audio playback through digital speakers (USB, etc.) is not working with Windows 2000 or Windows ME.
Note: Digital CD Audio is not an available option with Windows 95/98

COMMENT:
Toshiba portable computers are designed for CD Audio playback through internal speakers.
Digital Audio is not enabled by default on Toshiba portables and is not recommended for normal audio playback use.
Important: Digital Audio playback quality may be less than optimum or it may not work at all. If you experience audio playback issues after using the following resolution simply run through the procedure once again to disable Digital Audio.

Resolution

To listen to CD audio using digital speakers with Windows 200 or ME there are two requirements.

  • The CD-ROM drive must support digital playback.
  • You must enable digital CD audio in Windows 2000.

Enable Digital Audio

  1. Go to Start/Settings and click on Control Panel
  2. Click on System, click on the Hardware Tab and then click on Device Manager.
  3. Expand the DVD/CD-ROM Drives branch.
  4. Right-click on the current CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive and click Properties.
  5. Click on the Properties tab which will display the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM Properties page.
  6. Select the option Enable Digital CD Audio.
  7. Adjust the volume if needed, then close the Properties sheet.
  8. Restart the computer.

This should make CD Audio work with digital speakers. If however you are still experiencing audio problems there are no further settings Toshiba is aware of.
Contact the manufacturer of the speakers for further information and support .

NOTE:
If your CD audio was functioning correctly before you enabled digital playback and you are now experiencing less than optimal results, deselect the setting and restart the computer.

Also:
If the CD-ROM drive doesn't support digital CD audio, you'll need to connect the drive to a sound card to play audio CDs.
