How to determine, download and upgrade the BIOS for the Satellite 1600 & 1700 Series computers.

What is the BIOS Version?
The BIOS version can be checked at anytime when powering on the unit. Press [F2] immediately when this message is prompted: "Press [F2] to enter SETUP. ...". BIOS version number can be checked in the lower left of the SETUP menu.

DOWNLOADING BIOS FILE FROM THE TOSHIBA SUPPORT WEB SITE

1. Log on to http://pcsupport.toshiba.com
2. Click on Tech Support Center.
3. Select Product type, Family and Model. Then click on Downloads.
4. Scroll down to ACPI Flash BIOS Version x.xxx for Satellite 16xx/16xx......
   To download this latest BIOS version, click on the Download diskette icon.
   
5. Click OK.

EXTRACTING THE DOWNLOADED BIOS FILE

1. Insert a blank diskette into floppy drive A, then click Save
   
   
2. Click OK after the download process is completed. Go to Windows Explorer, change to [A:]
3. Select and double click the downloaded file xxxxvxxx.exe, then click OK to extract the file
   
4. Click Unzip.
   
5. Click OK.
   
6. By using the same diskette currently in drive A, press (y) then Enter.
   
7. Press any key to continue...
   
8. The contents of README.TXT file will be displayed
   Note: When you are finished looking over the Readme.TXT file press Esc to close the Readme file and return to Windows.

UPGRADING THE BIOS
To upgrade the unit's BIOS
Note: The unit should have either a fully charged battery installed or an AC adapter plugged in:

1. Insert the new created Flash BIOS Installation Diskette Vx.xx into the unit to be upgraded.
2. Power ON, system will boot automatically from this Flash BIOS Installation Diskette Vx.xx. A message will prompt the user for selecting either: CANCEL [Ctrl-C] or CONTINUE
   [press any key] with the BIOS upgrade process.
3. Press a key to continue with the upgrade process.
   - The BIOS ROM file will be loaded when a key is pressed
   - This step takes about two minutes to complete.
   - Once the BIOS ROM file has successfully loaded, the display will black out for few seconds.
4. Remove the Flash BIOS Installation Diskette Vx.xx. System is now rebooting from the hard drive.
