Overview:

This TechNote addresses the behavior of Dynabook computers when a BIOS Supervisor Password is added and provides guidance on how to avoid the BIOS password prompt during normal boot.

BIOS Supervisor Password Behavior:

When the Supervisor Password is enabled in the BIOS, the system's response varies based on the method used to exit the session. The following scenarios describe the expected behavior:

Exiting the BIOS:

  • Exit Saving Changes
    • Behavior: Keeps the BIOS Supervisor session active.
    • Result: Prompts for the Supervisor BIOS Password before allowing the system to continue booting.
  • Exit Discarding Changes
    • Behavior: Keeps the BIOS Supervisor session active.
    • Result: Prompts for the Supervisor BIOS Password before allowing the system to continue booting.
  • Save Changes and Power Off
    • Behavior: Powers the system completely off.
    • Result: Does not prompt for the Supervisor BIOS Password upon being powered back on, allowing the system to boot normally.

Note: Handling the Supervisor BIOS password as described is a specification requirement for Dynabook computers.

Recommendation:

To avoid the BIOS password prompt during a normal boot, it is recommended to use the "Save Changes and Power Off" option when exiting the BIOS.

BIOS Update:

Dynabook has modified the BIOS (version 27.84) to enhance the user experience. With this update, both the "Exit Saving Changes" and "Exit Discarding Changes" options will now power the system off completely. This change eliminates the Supervisor BIOS Password prompt upon reboot, allowing for a smoother and more efficient startup process.

Conclusion:

By following the recommended method of using "Save Changes and Power Off" or updating to BIOS version 27.84, users can ensure a seamless boot process without unnecessary password prompts.
