On certain TOSHIBA laptop models, the display is composed of Light Emitting Diodes with light emanating from the back, as opposed to the sides. The advantages are that a backlit display will be brighter and more even across the entire screen.  Additionally since LEDs use less energy than FL lighting, LED backlighting improves battery performance..
