Symptoms
The optical drive occasionally makes clicking noises and the LEDs on the drive (if present) turn on briefly.
Diagnosis
The issue may be associated with the TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor application (TPCHSrv service). When the computer is started, "TPCHSrv.exe" automatically starts and performs a check on the optical drive (CD-DRIVE) at regular intervals (approx. every 10 minutes). When these checks are performed, a clicking noise may be heard.
Solution
To stop the periodical checking of the optical drive, you can disable the TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor.
IMPORTANT: TOSHIBA does NOT recommend disabling or uninstalling the TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor.
Disabling the TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor will stop the periodic checking and possibly the subsequent noise. To disable the TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor from automatically starting when the computer boots up, perform the following:
- Go to START and type msconfig into the search bar.
- Open the msconfig.exe link.
- Select the STATUP tab, scroll down to TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor.
- Uncheck TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor.and select APPLY.
- Reboot your computer with these updated settings.
- If at a later time you wish to enable the program to start automatically, perform these steps again and place a checkmark in the box.
To confirm the solution you can open the health monitor by going to START > ALL PROGRAMS > TOSHIBA > SUPPORT & RECOVERY > PC HEALTH MONITOR. This will manually enable the TOSHIBA PC Health Monitor and the sound will be heard.
