You can use the Reader app, which comes with Windows 8 and Windows RT, to open and view PDF and XPS files.

NOTE: If viewing a PDF file on a web site using a browser, the file will open within the browser itself. Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox will require a separate plug-in to view PDF files, Internet Explorer does not require a plug-in.

Open a file:

NOTE: If a 3rd party PDF viewer is installed, the Reader App may no longer open files.

From the file

  1. Double-click the PDF or XPS file you wish to open.
  2. The Reader App will open the file for viewing.

From the Reader App

  1. Open the Reader app from the start screen.
  2. Select Browse.
  3. Navigate to the location of the PDF or XPS files.
  4. Select the file you wish to open.
  5. The Reader App will open the file for viewing.

Close a file:

  1. With the file open in the Reader app, swipe up from the bottom edge. (If you're using a mouse, right-click within the app.)
  2. Tap or click More.
  3. Tap or click Close file.
