Information
What can I do if my Windows 8 computer won’t boot from the USB recovery media or boots from it and gives an error regarding UEFI?

Answer

To boot from the USB recovery media, your computer’s UEFI Boot Mode should be set to "UEFI."

A small number of users might encounter the following problem: When the UEFI Boot Mode is set to "UEFI," the recovery media won't load. When it's set "CSM," you see an error saying “BIOS is not UEFI.”

(Note: Click the link below to see how to enter the UEFI setup.)

UEFI Setup

USB recovery media ordered from Toshiba currently should not have this problem. However, a small number of USB recovery media shipped in the past may see this error. If you do, please contact customer support and request replacement USB recovery media.

Alternatively, you can use this work-around:

You can use a second USB flash memory drive to correct this. Please note that this will format the new USB stick. You’ll lose all data stored on it. Follow the directions carefully; using the wrong disk number (as described in step 5) could cause you to lose all data on the wrong drive.

  1. Connect the second USB flash memory drive.
  2. Open an elevated command prompt. In Windows 8, hold the Windows key and press ‘x’, then select “Command Prompt (Admin).” In Windows 7, type “Command Prompt” in the Start Menu’s search field, right-click it, and select “Run as administrator.”
  3. Type “diskpart” and press ENTER.
  4. Type “list disk” and press ENTER.
  5. Find the disk number for your USB flash drive. It’s very important that you use the appropriate disk number. If you use the wrong disk number, you will delete the wrong partition, causing you to lose all data on one of your other drives.
  6. Type “select disk #” using the number you found in step 5 in place of '#'. Then press ENTER.
  7. Type “clean” and press ENTER.
  8. Type “create partition primary” and press ENTER.
  9. Type “format fs=fat32 quick” and press ENTER.
  10. Type “active” and press ENTER.
  11. Type “assign” and press ENTER.
  12. Type “list volume” and press ENTER.
  13. Type “exit” and press ENTER.
  14. Now copy all files from the Toshiba-provided USB recovery media to your new USB flash memory drive.
  15. Once the copy is completed, boot from your new USB recovery media with your computer’s UEFI Boot Mode set to UEFI.
