How can I adjust power options in Windows?

Question

How can I adjust power options in Windows?

Answer

Sometimes you might want to alter your power settings. Common reasons are the following:

  • You want better performance.
  • You want better battery life.
  • You want to change what happens when you close the lid.
  • You want to change what the power button does.
  • You want to change when the laptop enters sleep mode.

These can be changed from the Power Options screen. How you get to the Power Option is slightly different depending on your version of Windows.

Windows 10 and Windows 8

  • Hold the Windows key and press 'x' and then select "Power Options."

Windows 7 and Windows Vista

  • Type "Power Options" in the Start Menu's search field and press ENTER.

You can change plans by selecting a new plan. To change the settings of a plan, select "Change plan settings" next to plan you want to change. You can change what what closing the lid or pressing the power button does at the left.

Changing what pressing the power buttons or closing the lid does

It's common that you might want to change what pressing the power buttons or closing the lid does on your computer. These settings are simple to change.

  • Select either "Choose what the power buttons do" or "Choose what closing  the lid does" at the left.
  • Locate the drop-down lists in the section titled "Power and sleep buttons and lid settings"
  • Select your desired settings from the list

For example, you might want the power button to sleep the computer when your computer isn't connected to AC power and to shut down when it is plugged in to AC power. In this case, locate "When I press the power button" and choose "Sleep" under "On battery" and "Shut down" under "Plugged in." If you want the computer to sleep when the lid is closed and your computer isn't plugged in to AC power but you want the computer to do nothing when it's closed while connected to power, locate "When I close the lid" and select "Sleep" under "On battery" and "Do nothing" under "Plugged in."
