Most smart devices including tablets and laptops are equipped with an accelerometer and gyroscope. Accelerometers measure linear motion AND gravity at the same time. The gyroscope measures rotational motion, not linear acceleration. If you were to slowly turn your body, the accelerometer would not catch it. However, the gyroscope could tell you exactly how far you turned and where you turned, from your initial position. What’s more, the gyroscope is immune to the effect of gravity, so exact changes can be read directly regardless of position. In a word, the gyroscope fits the way the human body works.
When installed in a tablet or laptop, the gyroscope can assist with the following features:
- Device Control- Playing a game such as a flight simulator requiring movement of the device for control.
- Image Stabilization- When taking a picture, touching the device to activate the shutter causes movement. A gyroscope can record the exact rotational motions (like a shaky hand) and can be used to remove the motion from the picture resulting in a consistently better picture.
- GPS Location - When using navigation, your device may intermittently lose GPS signal. However once you have a direction locked in, the gyroscope can keep you on track to the target. A gyroscope used in conjunction with other components can to take you through a multiple turn destination from a known location without a GPS signal (after location has been determined by connecting to GPS prior to losing signal), something a compass could not manage.
