Question
How can I determine whether my computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows?
Answer
You can use the Microsoft Fix It at the following link to automatically detect whether your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows.
If you'd rather manually check, you can do so by following these steps for your operating system. Note that detailed instructions are also available from Microsoft at the same link.
Windows 7 and Vista
- Open the Start Menu.
- Type "System" in the search field.
- Select "System" under "Control Panel."
- In the System window that opens, consider the value corresponding to "System type" in the "System" section.
- "64-bit Operating System" will be listed for 64-bit versions, and "32-bit Operating System" will be listed for 32-bit versions.
Windows XP
- Open the Start Menu.
- Click "Run."
- Type "sysdm.cpl" and press OK.
- Click the "General" tab.
- Under system, the operating system will list "x64 Edition" as part of the version if it's a 64-bit version. If it does not mention that, it a 32-bit version.
