System repair disc media can be created on a USB flash drive or CD/DVD (if laptop is equipped with a DVD drive or can connect to an external one). A "system repair disc" is used when the machine is not booting or operating properly.

USB Media System Repair Disc

To create a system repair disc media on a USB flash drive, perform the following:

1. Open the Charm Bar. This can be accomplished by either holding the "Windows" key and pressing the "C" key or on a device with a touch interface by swiping from the right hand side of the screen towards the center.

2. Select "Search".

3. Type "Recovery" into the search field.

4. Under the search field, select "Settngs".

5. In the Settings search results, select "Create a Recovery Drive".

6. When the pop up windows requesting to allow the program to make changes to the computer, select "Yes" to continue.

7. The "Recovery Drive" window will open. Select "Next".

8. The system will analyze the request and determine the USB flash drive capacity necessary to create the repair disc media.

NOTE: "Next" will remain "grayed" out untill a USB flash drive is connected to the laptop. If a repair disk type media has been chosen, you will be shown the option to create a repair disc on a CD or DVD instead". To create a repair disc on a CD/DVD, go to CD/DVD REPAIR DISC.

9. Connect the required capacity USB flash drive to the laptop. The system will recognize the USB flash drive and refresh the screen. Select "Next" to continue. If multiple USB flash drives are shown, select the one you wish to create the repair disc media on.

IMPORTANT: During the next step, the USB flash drive used will be formatted prior to creating the recovery or repair disc media. Any files on the USB flash drive will be erased.

10. Confirm you wish to erase all data from the USB flash drive and create the repair disc media by selecting "Create".

11. The recovery or repair disc media will be created.

12. When "The recovery drive is ready" message appears, select "Finish". In thjis instance, the repair disc media has been created. Additional options are shown if recovery media has been created. See the warning below.

13. Click "Finish" to close

14. Your system repair disc USB media has been created. Label the USB flash drive and store in a secure place.

CD/DVD System Repair Disc

To create a system repair disc on a CD or DVD, perform the following:

1. Open the Charm Bar. This can be accomplished by either holding the "Windows" key and pressing the "C" key or on a device with a touch interface by swiping from the right hand side of the screen towards the center.

2. Select "Search".

3. Type "Recovery" into the search field.

4. Under the search field, select "Settngs".

5. In the Settings search results, select "Create a Recovery Drive".

6. When the pop up windows requesting to allow the program to make changes to the computer, select "Yes" to continue.

7. The "Recovery Drive" window will open. Select "Next".

  - DO NOT place a checkmark in the box "Copy the recovery partition..." or the option to create a system repair disc will not be available.

8. The system will analyze the request and determine the USB flash drive capacity necessary to perform the selected recovery media. To create recovery media using CDs or DVDs, click on "Create a system repair disc with a CD or DVD instead" located at the lower Left of the window.

9. Insert a blank CD or DVD into the drive and click "Create disc".

10. The system repair disc will be created.

11. When creation of the system repair disc is complete a dialog box will appear for "Using the system repair disc". Label the disc as shown.

12. Click "OK" to close and store the repair disc in a secure place.

13. Click "Cancel" to exit the Recovery Drive program.
