The following article describes how to enable/disable Near Field Communications (NFC) and transfer data between devices using NFC technology.

ENABLING / DISABLING NFC

NFC can be enabled and disabled seperately by performing the following:

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen to open the charms bar.
  2. Tap "Search".
  3. Type "NFC" into the search field.
  4. Select "Settings" from under the search box on the Right.
  5. Under "Settings" search returns, select "Turn wireless communications on or off".
  6. PC Settings will open and display the "Wireless" options.
  7. Under "Wireless Devices" toggle "NFC" ON or OFF.

The NFC function of the notebook is now either enabled or disabled depending on the selection.

NOTE: If Airplane Mode is turned ON, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GNSS (GPS Antenna) will be disabled. To toggle Airplane Mode ON and OFF, press the F12 key.

 

TRANSFERRING DATA USING NFC

The following procedure explains how to share (download) data from a Windows 8 phone to a Windows 8 notebook as well as viewing the data afterwards.

  1. Open a photo on the Windows 8 phone.
  2. Open the photo menu by clicking on the dots in the lower Right of the screen.
  3. Select the "Share" option.
  4. Select "Tap and Send". This puts the photo into queue to be sent once a connection is established to another NFC device.
  5. Set the phone on the NFC area of the Satellite U925t notebook. The NFC area is located on the Left hand side of the palmrest to the Left of the touchpad and below the keyboard.
  6. Select the "Receive Content?" message on the notebook. This message indicates that a device is attempting to share data and asking the user to confirm this is OK to do by selecting. After selecting, the notebook will indicate it is receiving the content.
  7. On the next screen select "Import" on the notebook to download the data.

    NOTE: If a video is recorded using the phone and shared using this procedure, you will need to choose an App to associate with the Received Content before proceeding. Selecting "Import Photos and Videos" will import the file to the notebook.
  8. Once downloaded, the location of the downloaded data will be displayed on the notebook screen. Select the "Open Folder" button to open the folder and view the downloaded data.

VIEW SHARED DATA

To view the shared data go to the displayed folder shown on the notebook. For this example well show how to locate the and open the "Downloads" folder:

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen to open the charms bar.
  2. Tap "Search".
  3. Type "Downloads" into the search field.
  4. Under "Apps" search returns, select "Downloads".
  5. The "Downloads" folder opens in the Desktop displaying the downloaded content.

This procedure is similar when searching for other folders such as "Photos".
