WINDOWS 8 MAPS APPLICATION ON THE START SCREEN
You must have a internet connection to utilize the street level maps in the Windows 8 Maps application.
The Windows 8 Maps application uses the Windows 8 location API to communicate with all geolocation sources available on the device (e.g. Wi-Fi based location provider, IP based location provider, GPS, …) and returns the most "appropriate" geolocation data.
When the laptop looses connection to the internet, Windows 8 location API uses GPS to determine geolocation. Geolocation is updated in real time as the user physically moves the device. However the maps themselves DO NOT update in real time since there is no internet connection. If the internet connection is lost while viewing Maps, a message indicating lost internet connection appears in the lower Left of the screen.
