Wireless N connection speed is reported to be lower than specifications through some access points

Issue

The computer models listed above may only connect at 65 Mbps instead of 130 Mbps through certain access points.

Resolution

This problem has been corrected with updates to the Intel Wireless LAN Driver and PROSet Utility. These two software components must be updated together, as a pair, per the instructions below.

Procedure

Download instructions

1. Click the following link to download Intel Wireless LAN Driver for Windows Vista version 12.4.3.9 -- the latest version as of February, 2010.

2.  Click the following link to download Intel PROSet Utility for Windows Vista version 12.4.3.0 -- the latest version as of February, 2010.

You can also browse for the newest available Driver and PROSet Utility versions at the Toshiba Support website, at support.toshiba.com.

Save the files to a convenient location such as the Windows Desktop. Save all documents, and close all applications.

Installation instructions

The basic steps are:

  1. PROSet Uninstall
  2. Wireless LAN Driver Installation (V12.4.3.9)
  3. PROSet Installation (V12.4.3.0)
  4. Wireless LAN Driver and PROSet version verification
  • PROSet Uninstall

1. Click Start, Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs.

2. Double-click Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software.

3. When "Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless WiFi Software" is displayed, Click Next.

4. Click Remove to remove the entire software application.

5. Click Next.

6. The next message displays. "Choose what to do with your current application settings". select Save and click Next.
7. If a User Account Control window is displayed click Continue.
8. After the software is removed, the message "Install Shield Wizard Completed" is displayed. Click Finish.

9. Restart Windows.

  • Wireless LAN Driver Installation (V12.4.3.9)

    1. Double-click the previously-downloaded Wireless LAN Driver file.
    2. Click OK.
    3. If a User Account Control window is displayed click Continue.
    4. The driver install will start.  When the driver installation completes the "Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless driver Installer" window closes automatically.
    5. Restart Windows.

  • PROSet Installation (V12.4.3.0)

    1. Double-click the previously-downloaded PROSet Utility file.
    2. Click OK.
    3. If a User Account Control window is displayed click Continue.
    4. The installer presents the message: "Welcome to the Intel(R) PROSet Wireless Tools Installation Wizard". Click Next.
    5. At the next message: "Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for Intel(R) PROSet/ Wireless WiFi Software." Click Next.
    6. The License Agreement windows appears. Read it, click "I accept the terms in the license agreement" then click Next.
    7. Click Next to accept the default install destination folder.
    8. Click Typical or Custom. If you click Typical, proceed to step 10.
    9. If performing a Custom installation, select features from the list to install.
    10. Click Next.
    11. When the installation completes, the message "InstallShield Wizard Completed" is displayed. Click Finish.
    12. Restart Windows..
    13. If you use PROSet, open PROSet and click "Enable WiFi Control".
    14. Make sure that profiles exist on the profiles list.


  • Wireless LAN Driver and PROSet version verification

    Wireless LAN Driver version verification

    1. Click Start, Run, then type devmgmt.msc then press the Enter key.
    2. If a User Account Control window is displayed click Continue.
    3. Double-click Network Adapters, then double-click Intel(R) WiFi Link.
    4. Click the Driver tab.
    5. Verify that the Driver Version is 12.4.3.9, as shown below.

    PROSet version verification

    1. Click Start, All Programs, Intel PROSet Wireless, then WiFi Advanced Statistics.
    2. If a User Account Control window is displayed click Continue.
    3. Click Help, About ...
    4. The About window shows the PROSet version.
    5. Verify that the Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software version is 12.4.3.0, as shown below.
