Issue

The computer may lock up, displaying a 'blue screen' error (BSOD) with the message "Stop 0x0000007e" or "Stop 0x00000050".

This can occur after applying Microsoft's Windows Update 973879 to a computer running the 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows Vista.

Like other Windows Updates, this one may be installed automatically by the Windows Update service.

Resolution

If this Windows Update has been applied to your computer, follow this link for Microsoft's instructions to un-install the update, which should fix the problem.

Windows Update is no longer applying this update to computers running 64-bit Windows Vista.
