Depending on the direction and/or angle of tilt of your computer, the computer could automatically shut down to avoid overheating.

— from the Instruction Manual for Safety and Comfort, included with Toshiba laptop computers

The cooling mechanism used on the models listed above does not work effectively when the computer is oriented vertically — so that the rear edge of the computer is facing downward — as it would be if you carry the computer at your side with your hand cradling the rear edge of the computer.

This orientation causes the computer to overheat, resulting in decreased performance, and possibly resulting in the computer turning off without notice.

When you select Shut Down from the Windows Start Menu, an orderly shut down process occurs, which allows you to save your work before the computer turns off.

When the computer turns off due to overheating, however, you may not have an opportunity to save your work — and any unsaved data may be lost.

Toshiba strongly recommends operating the computer in the normal horizontal orientation, in which the bottom of the computer rests upon a flat and level surface.

If you wish to carry the computer in the vertical orientation, first turn it off, or place it in Sleep (Standby) mode.
