Information

Bluetooth® technology  in Toshiba laptop computers consists of three basic components:

  • Bluetooth module -- the main hardware component, including the radio transceiver

  • Bluetooth antenna -- separate from the module, and sometimes built into the computer's display lid

  • Bluetooth software -- drivers and other parts of the Bluetooth software "stack"

Some Toshiba laptop computer models are manufactured with complete built-in Bluetooth subsystems that include all three of the above components. Some models do not include the module, but do include the antenna and the software. Some models include only the software. Some models do not include any Bluetooth components.

Follow these steps to determine which Bluetooth components your computer has.

1. Browse to //support.toshiba.com, if you are not reading this document on the Toshiba Support website.

2. Click the Product Support link at the upper left of the Toshiba Support Homepage.

3. Select your model from the category lists, and click GO. (If you don't see your model listed, then click the Show All Models link.)

4. Click the Detailed Specs tab. Your computer model's Detailed Product Specification document will appear.

5. Scroll down to the Communications section, and look for "Bluetooth" within that section.

  • If there is no mention of Bluetooth, then your computer does not have a complete built-in Bluetooth subsystem.

  • If Bluetooth is listed without conditional terms like "optional" or "antenna only", then your computer has a complete built-in Bluetooth subsystem, including the Bluetooth module. Here is an example of a typical listing for a complete Bluetooth subsystem:

    • Bluetooth® version 2.1 plus Enhanced Data Rate (EDR)

The EDR feature may or may not be included in the listing.

  • If Bluetooth is listed, but with the conditional terms "Bluetooth ready" or "Integrated Bluetooth... antenna only", then your computer does not have a Bluetooth module, but does have the Bluetooth antenna and Bluetooth software.

  • You can also double-check for the presence of a Bluetooth module in the Windows Control Panel, and by using the Fn-F8 'hotkey' combination. See the detailed descriptions below.

  • If Bluetooth is listed, but with the word "optional", as in Optional Bluetooth® version 1.2 with TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack software, then your computer may or may not have a complete built-in Bluetooth subsystem, including the Bluetooth module.

    • Turn on the computer's wireless communication switch, then Press and hold the Fn key, and tap the F8 key.  A 'flashcard' like the one shown below will appear (shown here with Windows Vista. The arrangement of the icons will look different with Windows XP)

If a Bluetooth logo Bluetooth-logo-01.jpg appears among the row of icons (above), it indicates that your computer has a complete built-in Bluetooth subsystem, including the Bluetooth module.

    • You can also check the Windows Control Panel for the presence of a Bluetooth module, as follows:

1. Click the Windows Start button, then click Control Panel.

2. Click System and Maintenance, then click System.

3. Click Device Manager (at upper left), then double-click System devices.

Bluetooth ACPI entry in the System devices list indicates that your computer has a complete built-in Bluetooth subsystem, including the Bluetooth module.
