Issue
Windows XP workstations attempting to connect to the SG20 via Wireless 802.11b cannot locate the SG20 Access Point.
Resolution

Requirements:
User must be logged on to the SG20 with Level 3 access and it is best that these steps be performed while using a "wired" network connection to the SG20.
SG20 Network Name:

  • Logon to the Magnia SG20 Administration webpage.
  • Click on the Network tab then click on the Wireless button to access the Wireless settings page.
  • Look for the line labelled "Network Name". The information to the right is the network name.
  • The Wireless configurations are specific so be sure you write down the Network Name as you see it, caps and lower case.

    Option #1
To allow Windows XP clients access with "Reject clients using network name ANY" enabled.
  1. From the WindowsXP client workstation, Go to the Control Panel page and click on Network and Internet Connections.
  2. In the Network and Internet Connections page, click on the Network Connections link.
  3. In the Network Connections page, right click on your Wireless Network Connection and select properties.
  4. Click on the Wireless Networks tab to view the Available and Preferred networks screen.
  5. In the Preferred networks section, click on the Add button.
  6. For Network name (SSID):, enter the network name you provided the SG20 Wireless Network.
  7. Click OK to add to the Preferred networks list.
  8. Click OK again to initiate the changes.(note: No connection to the SG20 will be made unless the OK is clicked on this window. If you choose Cancel or click on the X to close the screen, you will need to perform steps 5 - 8 again.)

    OR

    Option #2
Disable "Reject clients using the network name ANY" in the Advanced Configuration screen for Wireless.

  1. Logon to the Magnia SG20 Administration webpage.
  2. Click on the Network tab.
  3. In the Wireless configuration screen, next to "Enable Wireless Access Point", click on the Advanced Settings link.
  4. Remove the check mark from the box for "Reject clients using the network name ANY".
  5. Click Apply and wait for the confirmation dialog box to appear indicating changes have been saved.
  6. Click OK to confirm changes.
  7. At the main Wireless configuration page, click Apply.
  8. Click OK to confirm changes.

    COMMENT(s):
Using the network name of "ANY" will allow the client to connect to any access point in the vicinity. Windows XP, by default, is set to look for all available Access Points and does so by configuring its Network Name (SSID) to be any. Rejecting clients using the network name "any" will prevent Windows XP users from accessing the SG20's wireless network.
