Issue

Using a Satellite 1955, with Windows XP and the FAX service set to receive calls on Auto Answer, a quick press of the power button to shutdown the system will cause the OS to hang at the "Windows is shutting down..." screen.

COMMENTS:
The Power button has 2 functions to shutdown the operating system; Windows Shutdown and Power Off (press power button for 1 or 2 seconds) and a Hardware Power Off (press power button for 5 or more seconds). The Hardware mode should be used when the Operating system is locked up as it will power off immediately with the possible loss of data. The software mode will close applications and shutdown the Windows OS before it powers off the machine

Resolution

Due to technical restrictions, when the Windows FAX program is set to automatically answer the modem and you quickly press the power button (Windows Shutdown), the OS will hang at the "Windows is shutting down..." screen. Then it will be necessary to use the Hardware mode (press the power button for 5 seconds or more) to shut off the machine. Therefore, be sure to back up or save your work before using this method to shutdown your computer when the FAX option is set to Auto Answer. This will not happen if set to Manually answer the phone.

If you need the FAX set to auto answer the modem, Toshiba recommends that you do not use the Power button to shut off the machine. Instead, use the START/TURN OFF COMPUTER method.
