AOL 7.0 / CompuServe 7.0 Does Not Find The Modem

Issue

When an user upgrades or installs AOL 7.0 or CompuServe 7.0, AOL / CompuServe does not find the modem, or it hangs while searching for a modem.

Note: You must follow the instructions exactly or the resolutions will not work correctly. If you need to use your computer to receive faxes or if the first resolution doesn’t work, you will need to follow the steps in Resolution 2.

Resolution

RESOLUTION 1:

  1. While the AOL 7.0 Installation is still searching for the modem, press "Ctrl + Alt + Del" keys.
  2. On the "Applications" tab, Highlight AOL Installation and click on "End Task".
  3. When prompted, press the "End Now" button.
  4. After the AOL program closes, click on Start and select "Control Panel".
  5. In Control Panel, Pick a Category click on "Printers and Other Hardware"
  6. Click on either "Pick a task, View installed printers or fax printers" or "or pick a Control Panel icon, Printers and Faxes".
  7. Right click on the "Fax" icon and select "Properties".
  8. Select the "Devices" tab.
  9. Highlight "TOSHIBA Software Modem AMR" in the Device Name box and click the "Properties…" button.
  10. In the TOSHIBA Software Modem AMR window, click the "Receive" tab.
  11. Remove the check mark from "Enable device to receive" by clicking on the box.
  12. Click "Apply" to save the change and then click "OK" to close the box.
  13. Click "OK" to close the Fax Properties window.
  14. Close the Printers and Faxes window.
  15. Restart the computer by clicking on "Start", then clicking on "Turn off the computer".
  16. Click on the "Restart" button.
  17. After the computer has completed restarting and Windows XP has finished loading, double-click on the new AOL icon titled "America Online" and follow the prompts to complete the installation.

RESOLUTION 2:
The AOL 7.0 / CompuServe 7.0 installation needs to be stopped and the modem drivers manually reinstalled by completing the following instructions.

  1. Stop the AOL / CompuServe installation. If already stopped, skip to step #2.
  1. While AOL 7.0 / CompuServe 7.0 is looking for the modem or if it has hung while looking for the modem, press "Ctrl+Alt+Delete".
  2. Click on the "Applications" tab and select "America Online" and click on the End Task button.
  3. Click "End Now" button when the End Program window opens.
  4. Close the Windows Task Manager window.
  1. Remove the "Toshiba Software Modem AMR" drivers.
  1. Click on Start.
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel double-click on "Phone and Modem Options"
  4. In the Phone and Modem Options window, click on the "Modems" tab.
  5. Select the "TOSHIBA Software Modem AMR" and click the "Remove" button.
  6. When asked if you are sure you want to remove the selected modem, click on "Yes".
  7. Click "OK" to close the Phone and Modems Options Window.
  8. Close Control Panel.
    Note: Do not restart the computer at this point.
  1. Manually install the "Toshiba Software Modem AMR" drivers from the Configuration Builder CD (Disk 1). You MUST follow these instructions exactly.
  1. Insert the Toshiba Recovery and Configuration Builder CD that came with the computer and let it Autoplay.
  2. In the "Toshiba Recovery and Application CD…" window select "Install applications and drivers" and click on "Next".
  3. In the next windows scroll down and select the "Toshiba Software Modem".
  4. Click on the "Install" button.
  5. WinZip Self-Extractor window will open. Click on "OK".
  6. In the next window leave the folder at the default "C:\modem.tmp" and click on "Unzip".
  7. You will be told that the files unzipped successfully. Click on "OK".
  8. You will be asked if you want to install the modem driver. Click on "CANCEL".
  9. Click on Start and click on "Turn Off Computer". (Do not worry about any open windows.)
  10. Click on the "Restart" button. Windows will shut down and restart.
  11. After Windows has restarted it will detect the modem and start the "Found New Hardware Wizard".
  12. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click on "Next".
  13. In the next window, select "Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install." and click on "Next".
  14. Scroll down and select "Modems" and click on "Next".
  15. When asked to select the modem, click on the "Have Disk…" button.
  16. In the "Install From Disk" window click on the "Browse" button.
  17. In the "Locate File" window, click on the down arrow.
  18. Double-click on the C:\ drive
  19. Double-click on the "modem.tmp" folder. You will see the "LTSMwxp.inf" file.
  20. Click on the "Open" button.
  21. In the "Install From Disk" window, verify that C:\modem.tmp" is in the lower box and click on "OK".
  22. In the "Found New Hardware Wizard" select the "TOSHIBA Software Modem AMR" and click on "Next".
    Note: Do not select the "TOSHIBA Soft Modem AMR".
  23. After the modem driver has finished installing, click on the "Finish" button.
  24. Windows will give a pop-up windows saying the driver is installed and ready to use.
  1. Complete the AOL 7.0 / CompuServe 7.0 setup.
  1. Double-click on the "AOL" or "CompuServe" icon in System Tray.
  2. In the AOL / CompuServe Setup window, click on "Next".
  3. AOL / CompuServe's "Searching for a Way for you to Connect" window will be open for a short period of time.
  4. In the "Select Your Connection" window select "Modem" and click on "Next". Note: If your model does not have a LAN card, skip to the next step.
  5. When prompted to change for all numbers click on "Yes".
  6. You will now be ready to sign on to AOL 7.0 / CompuServe 7.0.
