Issue
On the Satellite 1000 and Satellite 1005 with Intel Chipset(830MG + ICH3) Motherboard, when Windows XP Pro and Home Editions are installed, the Alps mouse driver (P/S 2) and the Alps Touch Pad Task bar icon may not be correctly installed, and may not be present in the Device Manager.
Resolution

To resolve this issue one of the following may be used:

  1. Click on START, CONTROL PANEL, and double click on the SYSTEM icon.
  2. Click on the Hardware tab, and then click on the Device Manager button.
  3. Double click on Mice and other Pointing Devices, and right click on the P/S 2 Compatible Mouse. On the drop down menu, choose Update driver, which will open the Hardware Update Wizard. Choose Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and click the NEXT button. On the next page, choose Don't search. I will choose the driver to install, and click on NEXT.
  4. Highlight the Alps Pointing device, and click on NEXT. This will bring up the last page in the Hardware Update Wizard.
  5. Click on FINISH and YES when asked if you want to reboot.

    --OR--
  1. Go to START, CONTROL PANEL, ADD AND REMOVE PROGRAMS, highlight the Alps Touch Pad Mouse driver and uninstall.
  2. Re-insert the Recovery CD into the CD-ROM. When the Toshiba Recovery and Applications CD window comes up, under Install Type, choose install Applications and Drivers and click on NEXT button.
  3. Highlight the Alps Touch Pad Driver and click Install. A window will come up telling you that you need to uninstall the previous version before you can install this version.
  4. Click OK. You will be allowed to unzip the files in to a temp directory. When complete, click OK. The installation process will continue. When finished, the machine will reboot to complete the installation.
