Information

When you set up a new computer that comes with Microsoft Windows Vista, consider using the Windows Easy Transfer program (included with Windows Vista) to simplify the task of transferring (migrating) your data, user profiles, and other information from the old computer to the new one.

Windows Easy Transfer does not attempt to move applications program files. Application programs (the apps in the Microsoft Office suite, for example) must be freshly-installed on the new computer, not transferred over from the old computer.

For best results, install applications on the new computer before running Windows Easy Transfer.

Windows Easy Transfer also does not transfer fonts, drivers, or other system files.

Windows Easy Transfer can transfer data for all user accounts at once.

Windows Easy Transfer assists in the transfer of the following types of data:

  • User accounts
  • Folders and files (including music, pictures, and video)
  • Program settings
  • Internet settings and favorite
  • E-mail settings, contacts, and messages

Windows Easy Transfer supports transferring data via:

  • The Windows Easy Transfer cable
  • Local area network (recommended only if both computers are on the same LAN)
  • CD, DVD, USB flash drive, or external hard disk drive

For more information, see Microsoft's Windows Vista: Windows Easy Transfer page.
