Issue

Using Windows 2000 you are not able to establish a dial-up Networking connection or you can only connect intermittently.

CAUSE:
This problem can happen when the Dial-up Networking connection times out, before the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) negotiations can complete.

Resolution

There are 2 different resolutions for this, try #1 first as the #2 resolution seems to slow down the connection speed a little.

Resolution #1:

  1. Go to Control Panel, Network and Dial-up Connections.
  2. Highlight the Dial-up connection you are using.
  3. Right click Dial-up connection, go into Properties, and then select the Networking tab.
  4. Under Type of VPN server I am calling, select Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP).
  5. Click on the Settings button.
  6. Un-check Enable software compression and Negotiate multi-link for single link connections.

Resolution #2:

  1. Go to Control Panel, Phone and Modem Option.
  2. On the Modems tab, click on the modem you are using.
  3. Click Properties, click Advanced, and then click Change Default Preferences.
  4. On the General tab, under Data Connection Preferences, change the setting for Data Protocol from Standard EC to Disabled.
