Long file names are no longer available in Windows 98 OR Windows ME.

COMMENT:
This error could be attributed to a hoax virus. An email is circulating among end-users with the following header paragraph:

"A VIRUS could be in your computer files now, dormant but will become active on June 1. Try not to USE your Computer on June 1st. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS BELOW TO CHECK IF YOU HAVE IT AND TO REMOVE IT NOW." (www.mcafee.com)

This email instructs the end-user to delete "SULFNBK.EXE" from their system. "SULFNBK.EXE" is the file responsibile for managing the long file names that Windows makes available.
Note: This fraudulent email has been recorded in languages which include, but are not limited to, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and Italian.

RESOLUTION:
An article posted at http://www.mcafee.com/ includes instructions for replacing SULFNBK.EXE if it has been deleted by the user.

Windows 98 Instructions

  1. Click Start / Run, type SFC and press the Enter key.
    Note: SFC = System File Checker
  2. In the "Specify the system file you would like to restore" field, type c:\window\command\sulfnbk.exe and then press the Enter key.
  3. In the RESTORE FROM field, type in the path to your WINDOWS CAB files.
    Examples:
    - c:\windows\options\cabs
    - d:\Win98 (where D is the drive letter assigned to your CD-ROM)
  4. Click OK and continue with the restore function.

Windows ME Instructions

  1. Click Start / Run, type msconfig and press the Enter key.
  2. Click the Extract Files button.
  3. In the "Specify the system file you would like to restore" field, type c:\window\command\sulfnbk.exe and then press the Enter key.
  4. In the RESTORE FROM field, type in the path to your WINDOWS CAB files Example:
    c:\windows\options\install
  5. Click OK and continue with the restore function.
