What are the upgrade paths that are available to upgrade and migrate to Small Business Server 2000?
Procedure

Small Business Server 4.0
You must first upgrade Small Business Server 4.0 to Small Business Server 4.5 before you can upgrade the product to Small Business Server 2000. If you are installing Small Business Server 2000 to a new computer (for example, if you do not want to upgrade your existing Small Business Server 4.0 installation on your current hardware), you are prompted for your Small Business Server 4.0 or Small Business Server 4.5 media during the installation. However, you do not have to install the previous product on the new server before you install Small Business Server 2000.

Small Business Server 4.5
You are able to upgrade Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5 to Small Business Server 2000. If you install Small Business Server 2000 to a new server, you are prompted for your Small Business Server 4.0 or Small Business Server 4.5 media during the installation. However, you do not have to install the previous product on the new server before you install Small Business Server 2000.

NOTE: A full packaged product version of Small Business Server 4.0 or Small Business Server 4.5 is considered qualifying media. You are prompted for this media during the upgrade.

Technical upgrades are available to upgrade Small Business Server 4.5 to the following operating systems:
Small Business Server 2000
BackOffice Server 4.5
BackOffice Server 2000

Windows 2000 Server
You can upgrade Windows 2000 Server directly to Small Business Server 2000. When you install Small Business Server on a full packaged product version of Windows 2000, you introduce the limitations of the Small Business Server product to the existing Windows 2000 Server installation.

Microsoft BackOffice Server versions 2.5, 4.0, 4.5, and BackOffice Server 2000
You cannot upgrade Microsoft BackOffice Server to Small Business Server 2000. However, you can upgrade Small Business Server 2000 to BackOffice Server 2000. When you start Setup when you are using BackOffice 2000, a new installation of BackOffice 2000 is started (this method is also known as a "parallel install"). This method is not recommended because it is possible that you may overwrite computer and program data that already exists during installation.

Previous Versions of Windows NT Server
You are not able to upgrade previous versions of Windows NT Server (Windows NT Server versions 3.x and 4.0, including Standard, Enterprise and Terminal Server editions) directly to Small Business Server 2000. To upgrade Windows NT Server 3.51 and Windows NT Server 4.0 Standard Edition, upgrade the product to Windows 2000 Server, and then upgrade it to Small Business Server 2000.

Windows 2000 Advanced Server
You are not able to install Small Business Server 2000 on a computer that is running Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

Special Note on Previously Upgraded Versions of Small Business Server 4.5
Installations on which you have applied the Exchange Server 5.5 individual component upgrade can be upgraded to Small Business Server 2000. The version of Exchange 2000 Server that results from this upgrade has the limitations of a standard Small Business Server 2000 installation. You are not able to run Exchange Server 5.5 on Small Business Server 2000.

If you upgraded the Small Business Server version of SQL Server 6.5 or 7.0 to the full package product version of SQL 6.5 or 7.0, you can either upgrade to the Small Business Server 2000 version of SQL 2000, or continue running the existing version of SQL Server.

If you applied the Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 upgrade to installations of Small Business Server 4.5 to upgrade the Windows NT portion of Small Business Server to the full packaged product, you are not able to upgrade this product to Small Business Server 2000. In addition, if you have upgraded Small Business Server 4.5 to BackOffice 4.5 or BackOffice 2000, you cannot upgrade this product to Small Business Server 2000.

Competitive Upgrades
Microsoft offers competitively priced product upgrades for existing customers of other related products. These upgrade packages are different from the technical upgrades described above; they do not support a direct upgrade of the existing product to Small Business Server 2000. In most cases, you can install the competitive upgrade packages either on the existing server after the hard drive has been reformatted, or to a new server. User accounts, data, and program settings must be re-created manually.

Ineligible Versions
The following versions of Windows 2000 and Small Business Server 4.5 are not eligible for upgrade:
Not for Resale (NFR) software
Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) copies
Evaluation copies
Beta versions
There is no support available for these versions.

Export Control and EULA
Use of any software made available for download from this system constitutes your acceptance of the Export Control Terms and the terms in the Dynabook end-user license agreement both of which you can view before downloading any such software.
