- Issue
- The colors are washed out, incorrect, or the picture is too dark or too light when playing a DVD movie on my Toshiba portable computer.
- Procedure
Adjust the saturation, gamma, brightness, contrast, and hue settings using the Display Properties control panel. As Toshiba portables use graphic chipsets from Trident, S3, nVida and others, the menu options that you select and the available options will vary. The following procedures are for the three major manufacturer chipsets that Toshiba currently uses:
Trident
Note: The following steps should be done with a DVD movie in the DVD-ROM drive.- Right-click the desktop and select Properties.
- Click the Setting tab.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Click the Video tab.
- Adust the Saturation, Brightness, Contrast, and Hue sliders to taste by clicking and dragging to the left or right. The default settings, with all sliders in the middle, should be sufficient for most applications. If you would like to set the settings back to their defaults, click the Reset button.
- Click the Apply button to apply the new settings.
- Click the OK button to close the dialog box.
- Click the OK button to close the Display Properties control panel.
S3
Note: The adjustment made using the procedure below will affect not only the picture quality of DVD movies, but also video in general.- Right-click the desktop and select Properties.
- Click the Setting tab.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Click the S3 Gamma or S3 Gamma Plus tab.
- Models with the S3 Gamma tab only have an adjustment for Gamma. Adust the Gamma slider to taste by clicking and dragging to the left or right. Unchecking the Link RGB box will allow the individual colors to be adjusted. Models with the S3 Gamma Plus tab have an adjustment for Brightness and Contrast as well as Gamma and use dials rather than sliders to make adjustments. Position the mouse pointer over the dot on the desired dial. Click and drag the dot to the left or right to make adjustments. The default settings should be sufficient for most applications. If you would like to set the settings back to their defaults, click the Default button.
- Click the Apply button to apply the new settings.
- Click the OK button to close the dialog box.
- Click the OK button to close the Display Properties control panel.
nVidia
- Right-click the desktop and select Properties.
- Click the Setting tab.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Click the GeForce2Go tab.
- Click the Additional Properties button.
- Click the Overlay Controls tab.
- Adust the Saturation, Brightness, Contrast, and Hue sliders to taste by clicking and dragging to the left or right. The default settings, with all sliders in the middle, should be sufficient for most applications. If you would like to set the settings back to their defaults, click the Restore Defaults button.
- Click the Apply button to apply the new settings.
- Click the OK button to close the Additional Properties dialog box.
- Click the OK button to close the GeForce2Go Properties dialog box.
- Click the OK button to close the Display Properties control panel.
COMMENTS:
This technical note makes the assumption that regular video when using other applications is correct and the issue is with the quality of the picture when playing DVD movies.- Export Control and EULA
