In Microsoft Windows 98, when you try to use a Telephony API (TAPI) program such as Dial-Up
Networking, Phone Dialer, or HyperTerminal, you may receive the following error message:
"There is no dialtone. Make sure your modem is connected to the phone line."
This error message can occur if you are trying to dial using a calling card and you have enabled the
"Wait for dial tone before dialing" option.- Procedure
Disable the "Wait for dial tone before dialing" option. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click the Modems Icon.
- On the General tab, Click your modem, and then click Properties.
- On the Connection tab, click the "Wait for dial tone before dialing" check box to clear it, located under Call preferences.
- Click the OK button at the bottom of Toshiba Internal V.90 Modem Properties.
- Click the Close or OK buttons at the bottom of Modems Properties.
- Restart the computer.
Note that this change affects only new connections for TAPI programs. You must modify existing connections individually.
Check your location settings. To check your locations settings:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click the Telephony icon.
- On the My Locations tab. Verify that your area code and country code are correct.
- Verify that the options for dialing from this location are correct.
- Try the call again.
If the location your are currently dialing from is not listed, create a new location. To create a new location:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click the Telephony icon.
- On the My Locations tab, click the New
button, a Dialing Properties Window will pop up
stating: A new location was created. - Click the OK button.
- Verify that your Area code and country code are correct.
- Verify that the settings for how you dial from this location are correct.
- Try the call again.
