Table of contents:

Introduction

This document will provide information that will assist users of the Toshiba Magnia and "M" Series Server Computers install Microsoft Windows BackOffice Small Business Server family of applications. Small Business Server software cannot be installed using the Toshiba Server Setup Tool CD-ROM installation program.

Microsoft's Small Business Server (SBS) version of Windows NT is a very special configuration that uses a specific, prepackaged setup process. This configuration and setup process is less flexible than the full Windows NT Server is. As a result, installation on systems that do not exactly conform to the SBS configuration assumptions can result in errors or other anomalies. Toshiba recommends that the Microsoft documentation be reviewed carefully before beginning SBS installation.

Please read the documentation provided with your Toshiba server for detailed information relating to setting up your Toshiba Magnia Server’s hardware. There is also information about the manual installation of the Magnia’s featured options like the Automatic Shutdown software, the Shortcut Switch and utilities provided for the optional equipment (i.e.; AMI Power Console for the RAID adapters.)

Besides the documentation that comes with the Small Business Server Package, Microsoft has several documents relating to setup, installation and precautions that should be used as reference material. This would include the Release Notes (on the SBS CD) as well as several white papers and Knowledge base articles that will be of significant help during your setup of the Small Business Server. You can find these items at Microsoft’s Website:

http://www.microsoft.com/smallbusinessserver/
http://search.microsoft.com/ (search words: "smallbiz" & "small business server 4.5".)

Precautions

Toshiba America Information Systems joins Microsoft in advising that the most important thing to do when installing Small Business Server is "Planning." There are many hardware and software options available when using this suite of business applications and many choices to be made. Take the time to plan your installation.

Microsoft Small Business Server's Suite of Back Office applications assume that certain hardware will be used on the server, specifically a network card and a modem. If one or both of these are not installed on the machine, error messages will display and certain programs will not install. We recommend that Windows (WHQL) certified hardware items be installed so that all functions of the Windows BackOffice Small Business Server Package will be best utilized.

For optimum performance, we recommend that the software and adapter driver diskettes available on your Toshiba Server Setup Tool (SST) CD be used. You can use the " Create Floppy Disk " utility available on the SST CD to create the diskettes that will be used when installing the Small Business Server operating system.

Known issues:

  1. If a modem is not installed, several error messages will be displayed and certain services will not be installed. Modify the winnt.sif file found on SBS installation diskette #2. Refer to " Modifying Winnt.sif ".
  2. Small Business Server Setup will not automatically detect 8255x Intel Network Interface Cards. Install the correct drivers from the Hardware Confirmation page during setup. Refer to " Installing the Intel Pro/100+ Adapter ."
  3. On some servers, installing the video driver before Service Pack 4 is installed will cause a NON-FATAL, "blue screen" STOP error. Refer to " Installing the Video Driver ."
  4. SBS requires that a disk partition exist prior to setup. Refer to " Disk Partition for SBS Installation ."
  5. Setup will fail if using the setup diskettes from WinNT Server 4.0. The setup disks from the Small Business Server CD-ROM must be used. Refer to " Creating Diskettes ."

Note: There are other issues that may arise from the above matters depending on your network environment. Please refer to the above listed documents for additional details.

Installing Small Business Server

The following information is designed to assist users of Toshiba Magnia and "M" Series Server Computers using the MICROSOFT BackOffice Small Business Server package. We have used non-specific terminology wherever possible in the following steps to accommodate the hardware and software options available to Toshiba customers. All of the software needed for installation of Toshiba supported options is available on the SST CD-ROM or Software Distribution CD-ROM that came with your server.

There are many different paths when installing the Small Business Server, all depending on the choices you made when you were planning and structuring your network. Each choice may cause a different scenario as the operating system is installed. The following steps will help get you through some basic installations. When you see a screen different than we describe, the answers you need are in the documentation available to you.

Step by Step Procedure

Create the initial system partition (See " Disk Partition for SBS Installation ")

Insert from the Setup diskettes, diskette 1 and the SBS CD Disk1, then boot the server

Insert diskette 2 when requested

Press ENTER to detect mass storage (for servers using IDE drives that do not need special drivers)
or S to skip detection and load special SCSI and CD drivers. (Refer to the SST User’s Manual for details on the correct drivers and loading information for your server.)

    • Press S again to load from a support disk
    • Press ENTER while "Other" is highlighted
    • Insert the SCSI driver disk and press ENTER
    • Select the correct driver and press ENTER to load the files
    • If your server requires 2 SCSI drivers, press S and repeat steps above
    • If your server is using a RAID card, repeat steps above
    • When all drivers have been entered, press ENTER to continue

Insert diskette 3 when requested

Press ENTER to match the list or change as necessary

Follow the screen prompts to create and/or format the system partition for the server.

The procedure will be different depending on how you setup your initial partitions. Remember that SBS requires at least a 1GB system partition or 1.5GB’s if loading the SBS applications also. It must be formatted as an NTFS file system. SBS can also reformat the drive to NTFS later in the installation procedure. (Refer to the Microsoft White Papers for details)

Follow screen prompts for any additional disks needed. After the format procedure and while files are loading to the system, remove any diskettes to allow the server to reboot.

System restarts to the NT GUI installation phase

Type in User Information. Refer to your planning notes

Continue to load and start the network setup

You will receive an ERROR MESSAGE during the setup procedure:

************************************************************************************************************
"A Setup parameter specified by your system administrator or computer manufacturer is missing or invalid. Setup may therefore ask you to provide this information."

"You may wish to inform your system administrator or computer manufacturer that the ""DetectAdapters"" value is missing or invalid."

"OK"
************************************************************************************************************

This refers to the Intel 8255x-network adapter, which is not recognized by SBS (See " Known Issues "). This will be corrected later in the procedure. When you check OK, NT network setup continues.

Click "OK" to continue

SBS loads numerous network files

You may receive another ERROR MESSAGE:

******************************************************
"The network failed to start. (000042a)"

…Additional text…

"Retry""Cancel"
******************************************************

If you do receive the error message, it is because there is no NIC installed or recognized. If you press CANCEL, installation will continue but you will later have to install the correct driver and setup the TCP/IP configuration as well.

To correct the NIC recognition error, install the correct NIC drivers by following the steps below:

    1. At the "The network failed to start..." error screen, Click "RETRY"
    2. Click "BACK" 5 times to the "Network Adapters" page

Setup will continue to copy the files

Insert the other CD’s as requested

After the Outlook 2000 (and Office 2000 if part of your SBS Package) have been installed, the system will restart

After the reboot, SBS will start its "to do list". Complete the setup according to your network environment PLAN

You may now install the optional items available with your Toshiba Server. Refer to the SST User’s Manual for details on how to manually install the Automatic Shutdown software, ShortCut Switch drivers and other useful utilities.

Special Instructions

Modifying Winnt.sif

The Small Business Server Package is designed to provide many of the services available in the Microsoft BackOffice group of business office applications. These might include items such as access to the Internet (modem), Fax and e-Mail service (modem) and Database services (attaching to other servers and workstations via NICs).

SBS therefore assumes that certain hardware will be installed on the server machine to accommodate those services. If SBS does not find those adapters, SBS will notify you. One of these notifications will be about a missing modem. To minimize the error messages if you are not using a modem, edit winnt.sif, an information file SBS uses to setup the server. (Please make a backup copy of this file before proceeding with modifications.)

To edit the Winnt.sif file (located on the SBS Setup diskette #2),
remove or remark out (;) the following lines:

  • InstallModem=ModemSection
  • PortName=COM1-COM4
  • DeviceType=Modem
  • PortUsage=DialInOut
  • PortSection=DialSection
  • DialOutProtocols=All
  • DialinProtocols=TCP/IP
  • AutoDetectModems=Yes
  • TcpIpClientAccess=ThisComputer

Note : If the Winnt.sif file does not exist on diskette 2, copy the Winnt.sif file located on the MS BackOffice SBS CD-ROM in the I386 directory to diskette 2.

Disk Partition for SBS Installation

Use a disk partitioning program like MS-DOS’s "fdisk" to create at least one partition before starting the installation process. The partition can be formatted during the setup procedure.

Small Business Server requires the partitions be formatted as NTFS.

Note : If you get the NT partition message that says the system partition is FAT32 and cannot be recognized, read the screen prompts to delete and recreate the partition as NTFS. Then continue the installation.

The minimum partition size needed to install the Small Business Server operating system is 750 MB. Microsoft also recommends at least 200 MB of free space per partition. Therefore, consider no less than 1GB for an operating system only partition. The step by step procedure explains where and how to create additional partitions prior to loading the applications.

If you want to install SBS and all of its applications on the same partition; you should have at least a 1.5GB partition, more if you will be installing Office 2000. Refer to your network plan to see how much space you should provide.

Refer to the white papers for additional information regarding disk and partitioning issues.

Creating Diskettes

Small Business Server CD:

(From the MICROSOFT Server Setup White paper)
The Small Business Server package includes three setup boot diskettes in addition to the CDs.

Note : The setup disks shipped with Windows NT Server 4.0™ cannot be used to install Small Business Server 4.5. Instead, you must use the disks shipped with Small Business Server, or create them using the Small Business Server CD, as outlined below. The Small Business Server setup disks should not be used to install Windows NT Server.

If the disks are missing or damaged and you need to recreate them, follow these steps on any DOS or Windows (xx) computer before you begin the installation and insert the SBS CD, disk 1:

    1. Format three diskettes.
    2. Go to a command prompt.
    3. Change to the I386 directory of disk 1.
    4. Run the setup program (winnt.exe or winnt32.exe for NT systems) with the /ox switch. The /ox switch will create the setup boot disks without installing Small Business Server on that computer. Note that the setup boot disks are created in reverse order: Disk #3 first, then #2, and then #1. Be sure to label the disks properly.

Example : Use Winnt.exe /ox from a machine running the Microsoft® MS-DOS®, Microsoft® Windows® 3.x, or Windows 95/98 operating system. Use Winnt32.exe /ox from a Windows NT–based machine.

Server Setup Tool CD:

The Server Setup Tool CD-ROM contains a utility to help create the adapter driver diskettes and utility software diskettes needed for installation, maintenance and operation of your server. See the Server Setup Tool User’s Manual for additional details on the diskettes. To create the disks, follow these steps.

    1. Prepare enough formatted diskettes for the drivers you will need for your machine (refer to your Server’s documentation).
    2. Insert the SST CD into a CD-ROM drive, the SST program will start automatically.
    3. From the Main Menu click on "Utilities."
    4. From the Utilities page, click on "Create Floppy Disks."
    5. Highlight the driver set you need and click "OK."
    6. Follow the screen prompts to create the disk(s).
    7. Label them as needed.
    8. Repeat the process for each driver set your server needs.

Software Distribution CD:

The Software Distribution CD contains a DOS based program to create diskettes from images stored on the CD. See the Software Configuration Guide for additional information about the driver diskettes. Follow the steps below to create the adapter driver diskettes.

    1. Prepare enough blank diskettes for all the drivers you will need for your machine (refer to your Server’s documentation).
    2. On any computer with DOS available, insert the Software Distribution CD into the CD drive.
    3. Open a DOS window and change to the CD drive (i.e.;"d:\>").
    4. Change to the \Img folder on the CD drive (i.e. ; d:\>"cd\Img").
    5. Insert a formatted diskette into the floppy drive.
    6. At the prompt, type "fdimg -w a" (No quotes, No Colon).
    7. Insert additional disks as requested for multiple sets.
    8. Create a label for each set and apply to the disks.

Installing the Intel Pro/100+ Adapter and Removing the Loopback Adapter

Small Business Server Setup will not recognize an Intel 8255x-based network interface card (NIC) during the setup procedure. It can be installed manually at the Hardware Confirmation page. This is explained in the Step by Step Procedure.

If you bypassed the installation of the NIC adapter drivers earlier in the process, a Loopback adapter should have been installed to allow the network services to be setup. In this case, follow the steps below to correctly install your network adapter card drivers and set the default network parameters:

To remove the Loopback adapter and install the driver for the NIC:

    1. On the Hardware Confirmation page, click Change; (or from the Control Panel) then select Network.
    2. Select the Adapters tab.
    3. Select MS Loopback Adapter, and then click Remove.
    4. A message asking to confirm your action will appear. Click Yes.
    5. Click Add, and then click Have Disk.
    6. Insert the disk containing the network adapter driver for your machine.
    7. Click OK, then select the adapter type from the drop-down list. Acknowledge any vendor-specific messages that may appear.
    8. Select the Bindings tab and click on each " + " to open the tree view to where you can see the network adapter listed under each binding service. Move your network adapter to the top of each list.
    9. Click Close. The TCP/IP Properties page will appear.
    10. Select Specify an IP address.
    11. Type 10.0.0.2 for the IP Address.
    12. Type 255.255.255.0 for the Subnet Mask.
    13. Select the WINS Address tab.
    14. Type 10.0.0.2 for the Primary and Secondary WINS Server.
    15. Click OK and click "Yes" to restart your computer. After the computer restarts, Small Business Server setup will continue automatically.

Note : If you need to use different IP addresses, refer to the white papers for precautions before changing the defaults.

Installing the Video Driver

On some servers, installing a third party video driver before Service Pack 4 is installed will cause a NON-FATAL, "blue screen" STOP error. To avoid this experience, wait until Small Business Server Setup automatically installs the Microsoft NT Service Pack 4. SP4 will be installed just after the Hardware Confirmation page is displayed.

We would recommend that the update be done when described in the "Step by Step" section of this document. However, any time after the reboot from the SP4 installation, you may change the driver using the Control Panel, Display utility.

After SBS has been installed, follow these steps to update the video driver:

    1. Click START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, DISPLAY to enter the Display property’s utility.
    2. Click the "Settings" tab, then "Display type…", "Change" and "Have Disk…" prior to inserting the video adapter driver diskette that you created from the Toshiba CD-ROM before starting SBS Setup.
    3. Click on "OK" twice, then click on "Yes" to install the third party video driver.
    4. Click on "OK", "Close", "Close" and "Yes" to restart your computer.
    5. Note : It is important to restart the computer before making any changes to the video settings.

    6. After the system restarts, re-enter the Display properties page and click on "Settings".
    7. Reset the configuration on this page, test it, and click on "OK" to accept the changes.

Note: Please remember that if you reinstall Service Pack 4 for any reason, you will need to reinstall the video driver following the steps above.

Reinstalling NT Service Pack 4

There are times, such as installing new hardware or changing current hardware configurations, which require Service Pack 4 to be reinstalled to the Server. Refer to the hardware documentation or the Windows NT manuals for additional details.

To reinstall SP4 from the SBS CD-ROM #1:

    1. Insert the SBS CD #1 into the CD-ROM drive
    2. Select "Browse the CD" from the menu
    3. Navigate to this file; \bkoffice\i386\sp4setup.exe
    4. Double-click on the file to start the setup program
    5. Follow the prompts to complete the installation

Note: Using the SP4 from the SBS CD will install the correct encryption format for your server.

Note 2: Refer to the Server’s documentation to see if any of the utilities or drivers for this machine should be reinstalled after reloading SP4 (i.e., video driver).
